Lydie's 2018 has immediate impact with good weight on the palate. The fruit is really quite intense. It is a Montagny with the volume turned up! This is gently spicy with some good tropical notes and a nice richness, but not fat up front. Deep and nice phenolic weight. A broad sweep of fruit that neatly tightens up on the finish. A bit mealy and unfocused initially but with excellent tension, reduction and – possibly – a little dissolved carbon dioxide to give it energy? The 2018 Montagny 1er Cru is quite austere on the nose despite encouragement. Perhaps a little anonymous compared to Boillot's other cuvées? The palate is better and certainly more expressive, quite tangy with hints of orange rind and apricot. There is almost a viscous texture towards the finish, an imprimatur of the growing season. Jean-Marc's daughter Lydie and son-in-law François Alzingre have worked alongside him and effectively run the domaine, and are now being joined by their children. Alongside the wines from the family's own vineyards, They also run a successful négociant business, vinifying wines from the Côte Chalonnaise with huge aplomb. In Montagny in particular, the wine is the best we have found in the appellation, and remarkably consistent from year to year.

Lovely lifted white flower nose with just a touch of ripeness to the fruit which makes it so inviting. Satisfying rich on the palate, but finishes fresh and long. This is so well balanced and already delicious to drink.
