A deft but not imperceptible application of wood surround the cool, airy and markedly citrus-inflected aromas of green apple, pear and a whiff of white peach. The racy, intense and overtly stony flavors possess a slightly odd character that is hard to describe while the crisp, dry and refreshing finish is entirely typical. It's hard to say whether the fining will alter the flavor profile or not, but my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt. The 2018 Savigny-lès-Beaune Clos de Village Blanc is the second vintage and comprises four barrels, one new. It has a slightly chalky bouquet with fine definition, tight at first, but it soon finds it voice. The limestone soils really come through more on the palate, which displays a superb line of acidity and a vivacious finish with orange zest, grapefruit and white peach notes lingering in the mouth. The lack of the word 'domaine' in the name signals that this is a négociant wine from Thibault Liger-Belair. On the whole Thibault buys grapes having tended the vines with his own team, so that the wines are domaine wines in all but name.
