LOCATION: Around Finniss River, the sweltering midday heat is balanced by cooling afternoon winds. The nearby Southern Ocean sends cold air into the country every night and thus contributes significantly to the aroma formation of the grapes. Finniss River stretches along the Fleurieu Peninsula, along the south-east shoulder of the Adelaide Hills. Altitude 120 m. The single location Sea Eagle Vineyard owes its name to the view of an eagle's nest in the highest eucalyptus tree in the adjacent canyon of the Finniss River. The topsoil consists of a mix of gravel and glacial sands and offers excellent drainage. The calcareous red-orange clay of the deeper soil layers stores the necessary moisture.
WINE DESCRIPTION: Pure Shiraz fruit with a strong backbone. Intense ruby garnet, violet reflections. Fresh plums and wild herbs on the nose, a hint of liquorice. Elegant fruit filling underlaid with fine chocolate and orange zest. Full-bodied and very good density, but deeply structured with strong, well-integrated tannins. A great wine that blossoms when decanted. Very long finish, aging potential 20 years.
VINIFICATION: Harvest at the end of March 2018; fermented on the mash in open fermentation tanks for 18 days, aged in wooden barrels for 18 months in 300 lt hogheads, approx. 25% new wood; primarily French oak. 100% Shiraz. L&S (Nov 2022)

Harvesting twice a year they commute between Finniss River/Australia and their famous white wine estate Salomon Undhof – Austria, which they manage in the eighth generation. Always one to make the right decisions at the right time, Bert is helped by iconic Australian winemaker Mike Farmilo, longtime friend and former chief red winemaker at Penfolds.
