SOAVE CLASSICO

2018 Montesei Le Battistelle

Grapes Garganega
Colour White
Origin Italy, Veneto
Sub-district Soave Classico
ABV 14.5%

Bright and clean Soave that totally delivers. Crisp but with no hard edges - no brisk acidity, just a great texture and clean mineral flow. There is no wood used here - but the juice stays on the lees for about 4 months and with this perfect fruit from the domaine's south facing vineyards there is an ample feel and deliciously tangible flesh. But no fatness. The fruit is lovely, soft citrus and some blossomy floral notes. There is some firmer pear and a crunch of apple too, which adds a lift and keeps the flow bubbling along perfectly. Delicious and so moreish. The perfect aperitivo or spot on with a summer lunch. L&S (Mar 2019)

Vivid lemon-lime fruit character with smoke, nettle and a touch of hazelnut on the finish. Characterful and ripe – really charming and effortless. Drinking range: 2019 - 2020 Rating: 16 Richard Hemming MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Aug 2019)

Here’s a superb Soave to enjoy with a lingering summer lunch. Whistle-clean, this Classico has notes of citrus, white fruit and herbs. It finishes with a surprising intensity and delivers a long, refreshing aftertaste. Pretty label, too. Will Lyons, The Sunday Times (Aug 2019)

Pale straw green. Delicate mineral nuances dominate the white flower and green apple notes on the nose and in the mouth. Linear and with an austere quality to its bright, high acid but harmonious personality. Finishes long and very clean with hints of nectarine and sage. Lovely entry-level Soave Classico that boasts sneaky concentration. Mostly Garganega with a little Trebbiano di Soave. Drinking range: 2019 - 2022 Rating: 90 Ian d'Agata, www.vinousmedia.com (Jul 2019)

Le Battistelle

Gelmino and Cristina Dal Bosco's small family farm is in Brognoligo, the ultimate zone for vineyards at the heart of the Soave Classico region. The family for years sold their grapes to the local co-op but since 2002 took the decison to make their own wines and express their very specific terroir. Thank goodness they did. Their prized vineyards sit on the slopes of an ancient volcano. The steep slopes make viticulture hard work - but the vines thrive here at altitude, firmly rooted in the ancient, basalt-rich volcanic soils. The top wine 'Roccolo del Durlo' comes from such steep vineyards, which similar to the Douro are built up on ancient dry stone walls so that working here is officially certified as 'Heroic Viticulture'!

This geology adds an unmistakable vein of mineral freshness to the two brilliant wines. They only grow Garganega here and the juice has a lovely weight of soft pear fruit, some melon and delicious fresh brush of citrus too - aligned with the clean, precise mineral undertone - the results are great. Finally we have found what we have been searching for. A brilliant producer of fresh, textured Soaves that you just want to drink.
