VERMENTINO

2018 Domaine les Yeuses

Grapes Vermentino
Colour White
Origin France, Languedoc-Roussillon
ABV 12.5%

From 2018 this is now looking so smart with its new label as well as tasting superb! Clean and pithy fruit lemon pep and great freshness. A brighter vintage than the 2017 but this has good weight too. A ripe note of warm citrus flesh fills out the palate. Charming and intensely satisfying wine - again punching well above its weight. The Languedoc may not be on top of your list of go-to places for refreshing white wine. It never used to be on mine, either: the sun-baked Midi’s winemaking hub is largely red wine country (about three-quarters of the grapes grown are red) and its spicy red blends are some of the best value wines in the world. But too many of the whites seemed rather flat and lifeless – especially during the years when the Languedoc’s only answer to the challenge of New World wines was to take advantage of the looser rules and regulations of the IGP (formerly Vin de) Pays d’Oc appellation to imitate Australia or California. Things are rather more interesting now, and this summer I’ve been enjoying the style (and it has to be said, price) of a number of Languedoc whites, not least Domaine Les Yeuses’ super lively lemony take on Mediterranean grape, vermentino.David Williams, The Observer (Aug 2019)

Domaine les Yeuses

Domaine les Yeuses is the source of our exceptionally good 'house' wines from the Languedoc-Roussillon, and they just get better with every vintage. Mediterranean in style with fresh, bright fruit flavours. Between the coast and countryside, Domaine Les Yeuses was built in the 13th century by the Templars at the site of an ancient Roman villa. The estate gets its name from an ancient forest of evergreen oak trees (“yeuses” in the local dialect). Today, sadly, they have nearly disappeared, but are being replaced by a path of olive trees. The vineyard of Domaine Les Yeuses comprises over 80 hectares (197 acres) of limestone-rich gentle slopes which enjoy a maritime breeze. This unique location suits a wide variety of grapes. The estate has been in the Dardé family for more than 30 years. Jean-Paul and Michel, brothers, share the vineyard and wine-making responsibilities.
