BOURGOGNE ROUGE

2019 Les Grands Chaillots Thibault Liger-Belair Successeurs

Grapes Pinot Noir
Colour Red
Origin France, Burgundy
District Côte d'Or
Sub-district Côte de Nuits
Village Bourgogne Rouge
ABV 13%

A blend of two plots, one hectare in Nuits which belongs to the domaine, and two hectares in Chambolle where he buys the fruit. 20% whole bunch with no pigeage. Lovely soft fruit with a saline touch - feels like village quality - juicy depth and supply fine tannins. Drinking range: 2023 - 2028 L&S (Oct 2020)

Reduction presently flattens the underlying fruit but otherwise there is good freshness to the relatively refined and caressing flavors that offer good length on the lingering finish where only a mild touch of rusticity appears. This delicious effort should drink well early on but repay a year or two of cellaring. Drinking range: 2023 - Rating: 86-88 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

Bourgogne vineyards below Nuits and Chambolle. 20% whole bunch. Fresh pink purple, lovely perfumed pinot, really very classy, scented cherries, prettily ripe red fruits with good acidity. No punch down here, just turn the cap and give a light pump over. Very long finish for a Bourgogne. Tasted: November 2020 **** Rating: 87 - 88 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Bourgogne Grand Chaillots comprises one-third Nuits Saint-Georges and two-thirds Chambolle-Musigny, with 20% whole bunch and no remontage in the winery. It has a very airy bouquet that I feel just needs more presence and fruité. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannins. A mellow Bourgogne Rouge that will be approachable in its youth. Drinking range: 2021 - 2026 Rating: 85-87 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

Thibault Liger-Belair Successeurs

The lack of the word 'domaine' in the name signals that this is a négociant wine from Thibault Liger-Belair. On the whole Thibault buys grapes having tended the vines with his own team, so that the wines are domaine wines in all but name.
