An exuberantly fresh if markedly restrained nose offers up a panoply of spice, earth and game elements that add breadth to the mostly dark berry fruit aromas. The tautly muscular and imposingly scaled flavors possess outstanding mid-palate density as well as evident minerality on the focused, youthfully austere and hugely persistent finale that is shaped by dense but fine-grained tannins. The 2019 Chambertin Grand Cru was a touch reduced out of the glass, opening to reveal aromas of smoked meats, plums, orange rind and spices. Full-bodied and broad-shouldered but appropriately reserved, it's a deep, textural wine of considerable authority, so I look forward to revisiting it in bottle. Rich purple, dark plump fruit with a certain nobility. Stands up to be counted, very voluminous, not the most elegant example of Chambertin that I know but packs a punch and has an exceptionally long finish, at which point the elegance does start to emerge.
