2019 Haut Médoc

Grapes Cab Franc, Cab Sauv, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
District Left Bank
Sub-district Haut Médoc
ABV 13.5%

The 2019 Beaumont has a delineated, fresh, cedar and pencil lead infused bouquet, lifted black fruit, light tobacco scents that emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly brusque tannins on the entry, but I appreciate the edginess and tension of this wine and the grip it exerts on the finish. Worth seeking out. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Drinking range: 2025 - 2042 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

This remains a little austere, as it was En Primeur, with firm tannins and restrained but well defined cassis and blueberry fruits. Tons of Médoc signature, and an enjoyably muscular frame. Give this a little longer in bottle before drinking. Drinking range: 2024 - 2036 Rating: 90 Jane Anson, Decanter (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Beaumont is a powerful, burly Haut-Médoc. Black cherry, herb, licorice, tobacco and game all run through this potent wine. The 2019 is a bit rough around the edges, but it will do just fine at the dinner table. Expressive Cabernet Sauvignon accents build nicely into the finish. Drinking range: 2024 - 2034 Rating: 89 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Beaumont, cropped at 50hL/ha, has a lovely, delineated bouquet of blackberry, briary and light tobacco notes. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, and not quite as supple as before, though I appreciate the tangy seaweed note toward the finish. Just what you want from a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur. Drinking range: 2023 - 2040 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

Château Beaumont

With its origins in 1824, Château Beaumont is a Cru Bourgeois estate in the Haut-Médoc on the left bank of the Garonne. The property has been owned by Société Grands Millésimes de France since 1986, owners of Château Beychevelle, the fourth growth Saint-Julien.

The 114 hectare estate is planted 53 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot to a vine density of 6,666 vines per hectare with an average age of 20 years for the vines. The vineyard is farmed on environmentally friendly principles, having used Terra Vitis and integrated farming techniques since 2004.

The harvested fruit is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats with three weeks of maceration. Soils are well-drained, deep and gravelly. With an average annual production of 600,000 bottles, the wines are matured in oak barrels (one-third new) for between 12 and 14 months, depending on the vintage. Their wines are characterized by their supple, silky and feminine structure. The tannins are generally mellow and rarely aggressive. All this contributes to making reliable, well-balanced wines full of charm and finesse, offering great value.
