A little known family-owned Margaux estate owned by Eric Léglise, located in Arsac to the west of the appellation a little back from the river. Lovely sappy plum and blackberry fruits with floral aromatics that lift this out of the glass and a savoury, mouthwatering finish - this is a really charming wine. Plantings are 65 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 25 % Merlot, 8 % Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot although I am not sure of the exact blend in this vintage. Tasted twice. A value pick. Drinking range: 2025 - 2038 Rating: 92 Jane Anson, Decanter (May 2020)

It is impeccably balanced and well worth seeking out Rating: 93 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Apr 2022)
Blackberries, blackcurrants, mushrooms, walnuts and baking spices on the nose. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Silky and juicy with an elegant finish. Pretty Margaux. Drink after 2023 Rating: 91 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Feb 2022)
The 2019 Le Coteau is quite closed on the nose despite coaxing, offering dark, broody black fruit laced with melted tar and humidor. The palate is medium-bodied with a little chewiness on the entry, but there is ample freshness and good bite on the finish. This should drink well over the next decade. Drinking range: 2022 - 2032 Rating: 89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)
Château Le Coteau
Château Le Coteau is a rarity, being one of the last small family-owned properties in Margaux. Éric Léglise has run it since 1973, with commitment to the land and the ideal of being a bon vigneron.
The vineyard of 12 hectares is on the classic Margaux Gunzian gravels, which as Éric says, favour Cabernet Sauvignon, and is planted with 65% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet-Franc, 5% Merlot and 2% Petit-Verdot. Most of the parcels border Grand Crus Classés, such as Rauzan Ségla, Giscours, du Tertre and d'Issan. The vineyards have never seen weedkiller or pesticides, with Éric believing in the importance of biodiversity.
The wines are made in a very classic fashion, 8-10 day fermentations that are not allowed to go over 28C, followed by a further maceration of up to three weeks, while the vats are tasted every day. At the right moment the new wine is run off into barrel and the skins pressed in a vertical press to extract the vin de presse which will for a large part be re-incorporated. The wine is than aged for between 12 and 16 months in French oak barrels, of which a third are new. It will be racked every three months, with a final clarification using egg white.
