All of the radiance of the year comes through in the 2019 Le Thil. Ample and broad in feel, the 2019 offers up generous dark fruit, leather, tobacco, incense and gravel. There is real weight and substance here. Élevage has softened the tannins somewhat, but there is still a good deal of heft. Drinking range: 2024 - 2034 Rating: 90 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Le Thil Comte Clary has a pretty bouquet of black currant and a bit more red fruit – yes, it still reminds me a little of the children’s fruit drink Ribena. The palate is medium-bodied and a little tight, with firm tannins, grainy black fruit and a grippy, quite muscular finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle. Drinking range: 2023 - 2033 Rating: 88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)
Atypical Pessac Léognan with a high degree of Merlot. Even on the nose you see a huge difference with its sibling estate Cantelys. This is riper, black fruits, rounder, touch of liquorice, the form in the mouth is very different, enlarges outwards, less dense. A good sign that the two wines are very different but both excellent. Drinking range: 2023 - 2033 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, Decanter (Jan 2022)
The 2019 le Thil is medium to deep garnet-purple colored, and the nose takes off like a rocket, featuring bold black cherries, mulberries and baked plums notes plus hints of wild mushrooms, forest floor and potpourri. Medium to full-bodied, the palate gives an impressively velvety texture with lively freshness backing up the intense black berry preserves flavors, finishing on a lingering minty note. Rating: 89-91 Lisa Perrotti-Brown, RobertParker.com (Jun 2020)
Château Le Thil
A very pretty little Château set in parkland, with 11 hectares of vines attached, on the top and south-facing slope of a clay-limestone hillock. The clay soil has prompted the planting of a high proportion of Merlot, and Florence Cathiard calls this 'the Pomerol of Pessac-Leognan'. The Cathiards of Smith Haut Lafitte bought the property in 2012, reuniting it with Smith, as it has previously been under the same ownership in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the two Châteaux were linked by a long drive. Viticulture is done in the same way as at Smith, using the Cathiards system of 'bio-precision'. This is a wine at a modest price which benefits from all the expertise of its great neighbour, and is excellent value.
