Lastly, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Reserve is another magical wine, and I might have rated this cuvée a perfect score more than any other Southern Rhône. Unquestionably in the same realm as the 2017, 2016, 2010, 2005, 2003, and 2001, it has an incredible, full-bodied, massive style that somehow stays perfectly balanced, with flawless integration of its fruit, tannins, acidity, and alcohol. Lots of red, blue, and black fruits, loamy earth, Asian spice, licorice, and violet nuances emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, building yet polished tannins, and a great, great finish. It’s a sexier, more opulent wine than the Les Hauts-Lieux release yet has the same perfect tannins that are so rare to find in the vintage. This required at least 4-5 years of bottle age and will drink brilliantly for 20-25+ years. Drinking range: 2025 - 2052 Rating: 100 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Nov 2021)

Cask sample, tasted at the domaine. Very sweet fragrant fruit, mocha and violet-tinged with leather and crushed blackcurrant also with red fruits underneath and a mineral graphite note on the nose. Sweet fruit on the palate, really ripe and succulent tannins. Wonderful depth with an unctuous mouthfeel – excellent freshness and a long finish. Gorgeous palate expression, wonderfully fine tannins. The alcohol is high this year, you do feel it, there is a lovely freshness however, and very good length. Not a perfect wine, but a beautiful one. Selection from Les Trois Sources, their oldest Grenache. Around 90% Grenache, plus Syrah and Cinsault. Only produced when the Grenache is balanced enough. Drinking range: 2021 - 2040 Rating: 96 Matt Walls, Decanter.com (Oct 2020)

Domaine de la Vieille Julienne

Under the guidance of Jean-Paul Daumen, this estate on the very northern borders of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation is now considered to be one of the leading domaines. One of the first estates to convert to biodynamic practises when Jean-Paul took over from his father in 1990, the 22 hectares of vineyards are nearly all north facing, giving relieve from the hot summer days and lending the wines the all-important freshness. Attention to detail is everything here, with some very old plots of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault & Carignan and a wine making style more at home in Burgundy, it is clear to see why it is held in such high regard by journalists, Rhône enthusiasts, sommeliers and restaurateurs around the world.

Trois Sources is from sand-based vineyards on the lower banks of the estate and are the more approachable when young, whilst the Les Hauts Lieux come from the limestone dominated higher vineyards on the northern boundary of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and need more time to come around. In great years a Reserve wine is made in miniscule quantities from ancient Grenache vineyards. Our visit in July to taste the 2019’s justifiably confirmed our excitement to be working with and shipping from Vieille Julienne; these are deeply coloured, pure and aromatic but with incredible freshness - you can buy these confident that they will richly reward patience over the next 8-15 years. They also produce an utterly brilliant Côtes du Rhône called Lieu-dit Clavin, possible the best value Côtes du Rhône in the entire Rhône Valley.
