A new wine in the range, vines inherited from Hubert Lignier which he took over in 2019. It's between Chaffots and Monts Luisants, above Clos de la Roche. 'The weave of the greats', says Virgile, 'bramble and faded flowers on the nose, and Grand cru density'. Very dark colour and very rich. Thick textural volume of fine tannins, aromatically reserved - what's here is pretty gorgeous, with a gorgeous calm balance. Drinking range: 2030 - 2045 L&S (Oct 2020)

The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Genavrières 1er Cru only finished its malolactic in June ‘21. Nevertheless, this has fine delineation and poise on the nose, taut and fresh with impressive mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and ripe, very pure and perhaps the most sensual and Chambolle-like on the finish. Excellent. Drinking range: 2025 - 2048 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2021)

(from a .30 ha parcel). Exuberantly spicy and lightly peppery aromas feature notes of plum liqueur, violet and lavender. The elegant and refined yet quite powerful flavors display excellent volume and density while coating the palate with dry extract that also serves to buffer the even firmer tannic spine shaping the impressively long finish. There is a touch of warmth but overall, this is terrific and also indisputably built-to-age. Drinking range: 2034 - Rating: 92-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

Exceptionally deep dark colour with a purple rim. The nose is a touch on the rich side, but not cooked and then the fruit absolutely explodes in the mouth. On the edge of grand cru status here, the finish is stunning, and beautifully balanced. 100% whole bunch treatment. Tasted: November 2020 5/5 stars. Rating: 94-96 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2021)

Domaine Lignier-Michelot

A domaine of 11 hectares, 25% regionals, 50% Villages, 20% Premiers crus and 5% Grands Crus. Virgile Lignier worked at the domaine with his father Maurice from 1988, beginning to bottle some of the wine from 1992 (it had previously been sold to the négoce), taking over in 2000, which was the vintage when he first bottled all the domaine's production.

In the vineyard Virgile made significant changes, stopping the use of herbicides, and beginning to plough instead. Green harvesting to limits yields followed, along with greater attention to grape selection. The domaine works organically except in extremis.

The wines have a lovely combination of enough body and richness, combined with a lively clarity of expression. The old vines village cuvées are seriously good, and great value too. Going up the scale each site seems to speak very clearly of its source and there is a brightness and energy along with full, seamless fruit.
