RIESLING

2019 Traditionale Pikes Polish Hill River Estate

Grapes Riesling
Colour White
Origin Australia, South Australia
ABV 11%

I always find it easy to write tasting notes for the great, dry Rieslings from Pikes and this 2019 is a top-class example of their epic, lime pith-imbued, insanely tight and resonant wines. These are electrifying brilliant whites which drink brilliantly in their youth and age gracefully, too. If you have yet to taste Pikes Riesling then you are in for a treat as they are so fine and so long. The only difficulty I encounter when writing about these wines is typing the price – it seems so incongruous that such a stellar creation has such a ubiquitous price point. Colour: Brilliant pale green. Aroma: Fragrant aromas of kaffir lime, lemon and talc. Maybe some subtle feijoa aromas too. It displays the clarity and purity of dry Clare Valley Riesling from an excellent vintage. Palate: Fresh, bright and delicate, the citrus fruit provides up front flavor while the mouth-watering spine of acidity elevates the wine to a clean, dry crescendo. Delicious. Summary: This is the 35th release of this much-loved wine. The “Trad” is always a lovely drink upon release, but 5 -7 years in the cellar will reward those who like a little bottle age. Drink with any seafood really, but it’s pairing with fresh shucked oysters is hard to top.Winemaker's notes (Jun 2020)

Pikes Polish Hill River Estate

James Suckling writing about Pikes in 2018 says 'They’re good, consistent wines packed with soulful interest, offering great value.' We certainly agree and are delighted to still be working together after more than 20 years. Owned by the Pike brothers, one of whom (Andrew) was for many years the senior viticulturist with Southcorp, the other (Neil) a former winemaker at Mitchells. Pikes now has its own winery, with Neil Pike presiding.

Generously constructed and flavoured wines are the order of the day, but wines which also have a restraint and a drinkability far ahead of some of the 'maximum one glass' reds that seem to dominate Australian shows and exports.
