SOAVE CLASSICO

2019 Montesei Le Battistelle

Grapes Garganega, Trebbiano di Soave
Colour White
Origin Italy, Veneto
Sub-district Soave Classico
ABV 12.5%

Bright and clean Soave that totally delivers. Crisp but with no hard edges - no brisk acidity, just a great texture and clean mineral flow. There is no wood used here - but the juice stays on the lees for about 4 months and with this perfect fruit from the domaine's south facing vineyards there is an ample feel and deliciously tangible flesh. But no fatness. The fruit is lovely, soft citrus and some blossomy floral notes. There is some firmer pear and a crunch of apple too, which adds a lift and keeps the flow bubbling along perfectly. Delicious and so moreish. The perfect aperitivo or partner for any fresh dish. L&S (Oct 2020)

There’s just enough weight of juicy fresh pear and a lovely softness of texture for a hint of chilli heat here – but there’s also plenty of beguilingly easygoing acidity and freshness for the seafood. This is a charming example of modern soave that does the thing so many Italian whites do so well: flattering and enhancing a dish without overwhelming it.David Williams, The Observer (Nov 2020)

We are all familiar with easy-glugging, everyday Soave and I am sure you will have tasted a handful of super-cuvée, poseur versions, too, which are often too chunky and lack bounce on the palate. Le Battistelle has an elite flavour but a confusingly inexpensive price tag. I venture that people browsing the L&S shelves might pass this wine by thinking it not quite serious enough, but this would be a mistake. Made from fruit taken from a high altitude vineyard, this is a wonderfully refreshing, brilliantly accurate, mineral-soaked, soothing, classy and super-long wine. Phew!Matthew Jukes, Moneyweek (Mar 2020)

Le Battistelle

Gelmino and Cristina Dal Bosco's small family farm is in Brognoligo, the ultimate zone for vineyards at the heart of the Soave Classico region. The family for years sold their grapes to the local co-op but since 2002 took the decison to make their own wines and express their very specific terroir. Thank goodness they did. Their prized vineyards sit on the slopes of an ancient volcano. The steep slopes make viticulture hard work - but the vines thrive here at altitude, firmly rooted in the ancient, basalt-rich volcanic soils. The top wine 'Roccolo del Durlo' comes from such steep vineyards, which similar to the Douro are built up on ancient dry stone walls so that working here is officially certified as 'Heroic Viticulture'!

This geology adds an unmistakable vein of mineral freshness to the two brilliant wines. They only grow Garganega here and the juice has a lovely weight of soft pear fruit, some melon and delicious fresh brush of citrus too - aligned with the clean, precise mineral undertone - the results are great. Finally we have found what we have been searching for. A brilliant producer of fresh, textured Soaves that you just want to drink.
