Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol

This has a pretty nose of chocolate, praline, blueberries, lavender and bramble berries. It’s medium-bodied with firm, compact tannins. Firm and focused with an enticing bitter chocolate character throughout. Some smoked wood. Intense and tightly wound. Opens on the palate. Try in 2027. Rating: 96 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2023)

The 2020 Clos L'Eglise is not as showy as it was from barrel, perhaps because of its recent bottling. Bright red-toned fruit, spice, mint, blood orange and rose petal are all laced together. En primeur, Clos L'Eglise was quite powerful, but I see more finesse today. Even so, this is one of the most concentrated Clos L'Eglises ever, since surpassed by the 2022, though! Drinking range: 2026 - 2040 Rating: 96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Clos l'Eglise, which was rather reticent en primeur, is now more expressive on the nose with blackberry, raspberry, cedar and freshly-rolled tobacco, becoming ever more floral with aeration. There is a lot of horsepower here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, slightly granular in texture, immense depth and weight. Yes, there are some wood tannins the will need to be assimilated, but that just needs cellar and a bit of patience. Drinking range: 2027 - 2050 Rating: 94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Clos L'Eglise is outrageously vivid and hauntingly beautiful. Inky red fruit, wild flowers, mint and rose petal come alive in the glass, all framed by powerful yet well-balanced tannins. Although the 2020 is a young, structured wine, its balance is absolutely impeccable. I can't wait to taste it from bottle. It is a super showing from Hélène Garcin and Patrice Lévêque. Drinking range: 2035 - 2050 Rating: 95-97 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jun 2021)

Clos l'Église

In a region of modest architecture, the high-spired church in Pomerol tends to dominate the sky-line. Gathered around it, a trio of estates trumpet their proximity with their name – Domaine de l’Eglise, Château l’Eglise Clinet and Clos l’Eglise. In fact, l’Eglise Clinet and Clos l’Eglise, separated only by a narrow lane, used to form a single estate until they were divided in inheritance in the latter half of the 19th Century. Clos l’Eglise’s rise to prominence has been rapid, dating from the purchase of the estate in 1997 by Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard who already owned a couple of châteaux in Pessac-Léognan and whose brother is the owner of Château Smith Haut Lafitte. The €12mil. price tag turned heads at the time although, given the continued growth of interest in Pomerol, it now looks like Sylviane got herself a bargain. The 5.8ha of vineyard are planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, and run by Sylvaine's daughter Hélene Garcin, who also runs the family's other properties, Haut Bergey, Branon, Poésia and Barde Haut. The consultant oenoligist since 2015 is Thomas Duclos. The wines are fermented in stainless steel, and aged 16 to 18 months in new barrels. There was a surprising amount of Cabernet Sauvignon at Clos l’Eglise when the family took over, all of which has been done away with. The Clos produces around 1200-1500 bottles per vintage.
