The 2020 L'Hêtre has a more restrained and nuanced bouquet that unfolds in the glass, with more mineralité and terroir expression than the preceding d'Aiguilhe. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins and gentle grip. Tobacco and graphite-infused black fruit lead to a beautifully proportioned and sophisticated finish. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2026 - 2045 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2024)

The 2020 L'Hêtre is a gorgeous Côtes de Castillon from the Thienpont family. Racy and also beautifully layered, the 2020 is impressive right out of the gate. Ripe black cherry, menthol, lavender, spice and game infuse the 2020 with notable complexity. Readers will find a wine of real character and nuance that will challenge those of more famous appellations. Drinking range: 2023 - 2034 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

The 2020 L'Hêtre represents the fourth vintage and comes from certified organic 75-year-old vines, matured in French oak, one-third new. This cuvée is made by Maxime Thienpont, whose father owns Clos de Quatre Vents in Margaux. The bouquet is a little fermé initially, gradually unfurling with blackberry, boysenberry and light iodine scents. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, one of the most structured Côtes de Castillon with a refreshing, quite saline finish and a touch of white pepper on the aftertaste. Lovely. Drinking range: 2024 - 2032 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

L’Hêtre

Jacques Thienpont (of Le Pin and l'If fame) bought the beautifully positioned Château Goubau in 2015 with his sister, Anne de Raeymaker. The property is 100m up on the eastern edge of the Saint Philippe d’Aiguilhe plateau, the highest point in the Bordeaux region, and commands a stunning view. It had previously been named Château Goubau after another Belgian family who had owned it for ten years and it was they who had converted it to organic viticulture. In 2017 the Thienponts added another 10 hectares of vines from the neighbouring Château Montagne. From the 2016 vintage these wines are labelled L'Hêtre (the beech tree) and Raison d'Hêtre (oh come on, it's irresistible) - which continues Jacques' theme of naming properties after different trees.

The estate is managed by their nephew Maxime, who grew up at Château Labégorce-Zédé in Margaux.
