(always the first to be picked of the reds) Lovely nose of ripe red fruits & sweet spice. There’s plenty of grip to the ripe tannins but also lots of freshness on the palate. Generous, elegant and well rounded. Very well balanced. This will reward some bottle age. Drinking range: 2026 - 2040 L&S (Nov 2021)

The 2020 Volnay Fremiets 1er Cru has a composed bouquet of beautifully integrated oak, quite sensual and pure, perhaps the most complex within this flight. It becomes more floral with time, plus a hint of furniture polish/mahogany bureau. It does gain complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry. Perhaps a little rustic compared to its peers, it offers moderate complexity and is slightly conservative in style. The finish lacks the peacock's tail you want from a Premier Cru. But there is plenty of flavor here. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Oct 2024)

More evolved in colour, as well as on the slightly mentholated nose. Plush purple fruit yet with an undercurrent of balanced acidity. Good persistence as well, this is a wine which should grow from here. Just a touch more freshness and we could be looking at an even higher score. Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted: September 2024. Drinking range: 2027 - 2035 Rating: **** Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Sept 2024)

A ripe but reasonably fresh nose offers up its array of dark raspberry liqueur, essence of poached plum and pretty spice wisps. There is fine intensity to the delicious medium weight flavors that flash good minerality on the rich and solidly powerful finish that delivers sneaky good length. This too could actually be opened on the younger side if youthful fruit appeals more to you. Drinking range: 2027 - Rating: 92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Apr 2022)

Domaine Henri Boillot

A domaine which dates to 1885, but which began properly in the early years of the 20th century under the current Henri's grandfather (also Henri). His son, Jean, was the one who really developed it. Henri arrived in 1975 and worked his way up, becoming the winemaker. In 2000 he began the building of the new winery at the bottom of Meursault, and he then bought out his brother and sister to keep the domaine as one, renaming it from 'Domaine Jean Boillot' to 'Domaine Henri Boillot' to avoid confusion with his brother Jean-Marc's domaine.

The Domaine totals around 14 hectares, with roughly equal surfaces of red and white, and of which just under 4ha is the Monopole vineyard of Clos de la Mouchère, a walled enclave within the premier Cru Puligny Perrières. The 2017 vintage saw the arrival of two new parcels of Grand Cru red, in Échezeaux and Latricières Chambertin
