BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO
2021 Prètto Giodo
Giodo's newest release, Prètto is a collaboration between Carlo Ferrini and his now 35-year-old daughter Bianca. Crafted with the latter's generation in mind, it aims to highlight freshness and an immediate drinkability without denaturing the spirit of Brunello. It swirls with appealing Mediterranean herbs, vanillin and mandarin orange. Well-formed plump and toothsome stone fruits are accompanied by soft, decorous tannins around the edges. Depth without weightiness, richness with vibrancy. Drinking range: 2026 - 2035 Rating: 93 Decanter Magazine (Mar 2026)

Showing a more jovial personality, this new wine from Carlo Ferrini is meant to bridge the gap between his Rosso and the flagship Giodo Brunello. The Giodo 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Prètto represents a new mid-level Brunello, a category increasingly shaped by a market less tolerant of overpriced wines. In the Tuscan dialect, Prètto means “truthful” or “sincere.” It delivers punchy fruit achieved through a slow 20-day skin maceration, along with spice, white pepper and pressed violet. Slightly more accessible in style, the wine still maintains good freshness and balance, reflecting Ferrini’s intent to offer an honest and immediately appealing Brunello. The wine is released in a production of 15,000 bottles from fruit selected across four hectares of vines. Drinking range: 2026 - 2040 Rating: 94 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Jan 2026)
A new wine that is a cask selection. It’s certainly different from the normal bottling, with aromas of red cherries, cedar, hibiscus and crushed stones. The palate shows round tannins and a juicy and savory finish. A second wine of this estate. From organically grown grapes. Best after 2028. Rating: 97 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Dec 2025)
Crushed black raspberries combine with shavings of cedar, sweet lavender and crushed violets as the 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Pretto forms its darkly alluring bouquet. Juicy upon entry, it offers fresh acidity and a cascade of ripe red and blue fruits, while inner violet florals add a lovely perfumed character. The wine displays exceptional length and balanced structure, leaving a citrus twang to enliven the finish. Drinking range: 2028 - 2038 Rating: 94 Eric Guido, www.vinous.com (Nov 2025)
Giodo
'Eleganza, eleganza, eleganza' is the mantra of the famed oenologist Carlo Ferrini. Since the first vintage in 2009, this estate has fast become something of a cult classic, immediately amongst the established top Montalcino producers.
Carlo's stellar career started with fifteen years researching Sangiovese clones for the Chianti Classico Consorzio and subsequently he has consulted at some of the greatest estates in Italy. In 2009 he finally put down some roots of his own, putting his full effort and expertise, his heart and soul - into his own winery in Montalcino. Named after his parents 'Giovanna and Donatello' - Giodo is small, just 5.5 Hectares - but perfectly formed.
Carlo spent many years looking for the best spot for his own venture. Just south of the town of Montalcino he found the site for Giodo. South-east facing, gentle slopes in small parcels surrounded by forest, perfectly exposed to the morning and early afternoon sun, and looking out towards Monte Amiata. He planted fifteen different clones of Sangiovese, all chosen for their quality of fruit and their low yields, using his earlier experience to select the very best for this site.
The winery itself, it should come as no surprise, is a minimalist work of art and the culmination of Carlo's experience in designing the perfect tool for the job for his clients over the years. It was finished just in time to make the 2019 vintage. The gravity-fed vat room has both stainless steel and concrete vats, and the barrel cellar has a variety of amphorae as well as multiple sizes of barrels.
