We were delighted to taste such a promising young Batailley this year. Following their recent run of good form this 2021 is satisfyingly rich and broad. Laden with classic cigar box notes layered over nicely ripe plum flesh and black berry coulis at the heart. This stays generous, supple and darkly attractive from start to finish. Trad for sure - with real appeal. Drinking range: 2025 - 2034 L&S (May 2022)

76 Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 Merlot, 2 Cabernet Franc, 2 Petit Verdot | 55% new oak Rather more fruit-driven and impactful than I might have expected, this is a good, honest effort from Batailley. With decent colour and depth, while it lacks a degree of complexity, it is a hearty and accurate wine, and it is sure to have a huge and very satisfied fan base in 2021. Rating: 17 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Jun 2022)

Stands out in the appellation, with density through the mid palate, and Pauillac signature coming through in the pencil lead, graphite and cassis notes. This is a good quality wine with a touch of blackcurrant bud and earth reflecting the cooler temperatures of the year, but plenty of depth and ageing potential. Tasted twice. Drinking range: 2026 - 2042 Rating: 92 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2022)

Subtle aromas of currants and fresh flowers with some tar and graphite. Medium-bodied with firm tannins and bright acidity. Very typical and bright for Pauillac. Linear and fine. Solid and tight. Will age nicely. Rating: 93-94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2022)

Château Batailley

Pauillac Cinquième cru 1855 The name "Batailley" appears to be derived from a battle that occured on the sight in 1453 during the Hundred Years War. During the early 19th Century, Batailley was owned by Daniel Guestier who did much to raise the reputation of the estate such that it was rated a 5th Growth in the 1855 classification. Batailley was purchased in 1932 by François and Marcel Borie who divided the estate between themselves in 1942, with François taking the half that became Haut Batailley and Marcel continuing as Batailley. Marcel's daughter married into the Castéja family, who own Batailley to this day. The two Batailleys are in the south of Pauillac, a little way inland from the Pichons. The 57ha of vines are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Wines spend up to 18 months is wood, with 55% being new every year.
