The 2021 Couvent des Jacobins is a real success, delivering aromas of cherries and plums mingled with notions of sweet spices, licorice and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's impressively concentrated, with a lively core of fleshy, succulent fruit and ripe structuring tannins. Denis Pomarède explains that the estate's vineyards were heavily frosted: the two hectares of this 10.5-hectare estate that were spared produced yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare, the rest a derisory four hectoliters per hectare. The 2021 Couvent des Jacobins has a clean and pure bouquet with blackberry, blueberry and light cedar aromas—not complex, but there is decent fruit concentration. The palate is medium-bodied and silky in texture, although it just needs a little more depth and grip on the finish. The 2021 Couvent des Jacobins offers terrific density and plushness for the year. Blueberry, spice, new leather and menthol are nicely dialed up.
