The 2021 Couvent des Jacobins is a real success, delivering aromas of cherries and plums mingled with notions of sweet spices, licorice and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's impressively concentrated, with a lively core of fleshy, succulent fruit and ripe structuring tannins. Denis Pomarède explains that the estate's vineyards were heavily frosted: the two hectares of this 10.5-hectare estate that were spared produced yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare, the rest a derisory four hectoliters per hectare. The 2021 Couvent des Jacobins offers terrific density and plushness for the year. Blueberry, spice, new leather and menthol are nicely dialed up. Reduction on the first nose, opens up to show a beautiful spiced plum character. This is a wine that often stands out En Primeur for its Petit Verdot, and needs time to soften up, but this is exceptionally well-crafted, with juicy acidities, sinew muscles, plenty of peony and raspberry leaf floral aromatics, and dancing crushed rock minerality.
