The first vintage vinified in the Barton family's new winery, the 2021 Langoa Barton is immensely promising, offering up aromas of cassis, cigar wrapper, loamy soil and black truffle, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless palate that's deep and complete, its vibrant core of fruit framed by ripe tannins and lively acids. It's a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Tasted three times. Rating: 92-94 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (May 2022)

Complex yet subtle aromas of currants, tar, lead pencil, redwood, violets and blackberries follow through to a medium body, with ultrafine tannins and a crunchy and vivid finish. Just a hint of chocolate at the end. Special label to commemorate the winery’s 200th anniversary. Sleek and refined, but give this three or four years to soften. Rating: 93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jul 2024)
Ruby red colour, welcoming grilled raspberry and plum fruits, austere even after ageing, but carefully constructed, and this has charm, with cedar, cloves and sandalwood grilling to the tannins, and a lovely salted cracker uplift on the finish. Well handled. 200 years under the Barton family, so a special label that we can see now tasting in bottle. 60% new oak. Technical director François Brehant, consultant Eric Boissenot. Drinking range: 2027 - 2040 Rating: 92 Jane Anson, Decanter (Apr 2024)
The 2021 Langoa Barton comes in a specially designed, one-off, hand-drawn label and a sustainable cardboard box instead of wood, to celebrate the bicentenary of family ownership. The aromatics have actually moved up a step since I tasted it from barrel: intense blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, crushed violet and just a hint of eucalyptus. The oak is neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with surprisingly plush black fruit, a suave and harmonious Langoa with a dash of spice toward the finish. This is packed full of flavor and will be difficult to resist in its youth. Drinking range: 2026 - 2048 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2024)
Château Langoa Barton
Hugh Barton acquired the estate of Château Pontet-Langlois (and re-named it Langoa-Barton) in 1821, a few years before he then bought a portion of the estate of the Marquis de Léoville Beauvais, which he renamed Léoville Barton. The Barton's ownership of Langoa is the longest ownership by one family of any estate in the Médoc. There was no château to the Loville portion, and the wines were, and still are, made at Langoa. The Bartons had already been a fixture of the Bordeaux wine trade for a hundred years at this stage - Thomas Barton left his native Ireland in 1722 and settled in Bordeaux, eventually buying Château le Boscq in St Estèphe in 1745. His grandson Hugh, who bought the two Barton estates, developed a wine merchant's business with Daniel Guestier (Barton & Guestier), and the Guestier family proved crucial in protecting the Barton's châteaux during both the French Revolution and World War II when the Bartons had to flee France. Langoa Barton's vineyard classed as a 'Troisieme Cru Classé' in 1855, is quite small for this part of the Médoc with only 17 hectares in production. Planted with mostly Cabernet and Merlot, at 9100 vines per hectare, like Léoville itself. Also like Léoville, it is a terroir of deep gravel over clay. The average vine age is around 35 years.
