MElanie Barton has done a fine job in 2021 here. The pretty gentle frame we expect is still there - and the fear was in such a cool vintage they might struggle to make any real impression at al l- but far from it. Working with the vintage nothing has been pushed at all - nothing over worked - but they have reached brilliant balance. Picking as late as possible - the fruit is ripe and pretty. Graceful and yet charming too - a real success here - but sadly only tiny quantities with just 20 HL/HA. 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Merlot. L&S (Apr 2022)

This classic Mauvesin has generous, pure, resonant fruit and a seamless palate. You are treated to a smooth, ripe mid-palate that shows no sign of introversion nor of a willingness to be bigger, wider, hotter or longer. It is perfectly balanced and nicely refreshing, and the fruit theme of black cherries and plums is enticing. Drinking range: - 1986 Rating: 16.5 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Jun 2022)

The 2021 Mauvesin Barton is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Merlot, with yields of only 20 hl/ha due to frost. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it features bold notes of redcurrant preserves, Morello cherries, and wild strawberries, plus hints of lavender, wild thyme, and pencil shavings. The medium-bodied palate delivers a firm, grainy texture and oodles of freshness to support the intense red berry layers, finishing with a skip in its step. Rating: 86-88 Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Independent (May 2022)

The 2021 Mauvesin Barton was picked from 30 September until 11 October and aged in one-third new oak. There is more Cabernet this year (52%) due to frost damage. It has a vibrant nose with black cherries, bilberry and perhaps more floral scents than I have encountered apropos previous vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, not a deep or powerful Moulis, yet well-balanced and surfeit with freshness, a pleasant bitter swerve on the finish. Drinking range: 2024 - 2038 Rating: 89-91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2022)

Château Mauvesin Barton

Château Mauvesin was purchased by the Barton family in 2011 after having been in the same family since the late 15th century. There are 49ha of vineyard in a single block around the elegant château (built 1853), with another 9 alongside in the Haut-Médoc rather than Moulis appellation. The main block is currently planted with 46% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc on calcareous clay, and 36% Cabernet Sauvignon planted on the gravel and sandy part, with 2% Petit Verdot. Its former Cru Bourgeois status seems to have lapsed, although the immediate investment in new kit by the Bartons would indicate a desire to reclaim it. The average vine age is around 35 years. Plot by plot vinification in small volume stainless steel tanks is followed by 14 mothns ageing in barrel, of which 1/3 is new wood. Melanie Barton-Sartorius is the technical director, the consulting oenologist is the Boissenot team.
