Smoked sandalwood, tar, grilled damson, tobacco, peach pit, blueberry and cassis. Owner François Mitjavile feels the aromatic quality of a vintage can be saved by barrels rather than lost by it, and manages even in this challenging vintage to get the 100% new oak barrels to add fragrance and nuance rather than being overpowering. One to look out for, this will be ready in a year or two, and offer prime drinking for at least another decade. Rating: 92 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (Nov 2023)

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon | 100% new oak | 13.7% alc If Domaine de Cambes is quiet and contemplative, then Roc is more ‘ROCK’. There is smokiness, expressive violets and roses on the nose and superb glossiness in the middle of the palate. There is more of a hillside/warmer/riper feel throughout this wine, bringing a more exotic nature to proceedings. Situated near the Gironde estuary, this is a more humid and foggy site and coupled with the clay soils, it matures late, and the results are often spectacular. The skins are so structured and packed with goodness that they bring depth and grace. The result is a tender 2021 with deep wells of black fruit in its core. Rating: 17.5 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Jun 2022)

The 2021 Roc de Cambes is shaping up beautifully, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet berries, wild plums, rich cassis, pipe tobacco and espresso roast. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and textural, it's a rich, sensual wine with an elegantly muscular profile, its structuring tannins largely concealed by succulent fruit. Seamless and penetrating, it's an especially elegant rendition of this superb clay-limestone terroir in the Côtes de Bourg. Rating: 91-93 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)
