En Créot is on the Brochon (northerly) side of the village, on 30cm of limestone scree soil. It's a terroir for sophisticated wines, and this has a bright and well-defined fruit, a sort of purple floral edge, and then sleekly positive through the palate - you can almost sense the slope, and it's polished and long. The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin En Créot comes from the unfashionable Brochon side of the appellation. This is 100% de-stemmed, while you would think there is a touch of whole bunches here - rather, it articulates the pepperiness from the limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, moderate depth, slightly lactic towards the finish with a somewhat bitter aftertaste. It will require a couple of years in bottle. Thibault’s team run these vines and he buys the grapes. Quite a dark full purple. There is a lovely depth of fruit here, with a fresh lively touch from the active limestone. The lack of the word 'domaine' in the name signals that this is a négociant wine from Thibault Liger-Belair. On the whole Thibault buys grapes having tended the vines with his own team, so that the wines are domaine wines in all but name.
