The vines for this Cote de Nuits are across the road from the Clos Marachele as go through Primeaux. Planted in 1937, it's easy to see where the concentration comes from. It is quite a delicate wine, at first inspection, with a lovely perfume, but further tasting reveals the quite series structure underpinning this wine. A Nuits Saint Georges without the name. The 50% whole bunch vinification is more evident on this limestone soil. Au Leurey ripens early and indeed there is a great balance here between the freshness from the stems and a ripe floral type of fruit. Beautiful and complex flavours march through to a long finish. Here too there is a vague whiff of volatile acidity on the more deeply pitched aromas of poached plum, black cherry and earth. The equally sleek, vibrant and detailed medium weight flavors possess pretty good depth though here the supporting acidity is sufficiently bright to be a bit drying. The lack of the word 'domaine' in the name signals that this is a négociant wine from Thibault Liger-Belair. On the whole Thibault buys grapes having tended the vines with his own team, so that the wines are domaine wines in all but name.
