This fresh red shows fine precision and focus, seamlessly knitting supple tannins and blood orange peel acidity with an enticing range of ripe blackberry and black cherry fruit, plus an underpinning of minerally tar and graphite notes. Long and fragrant, with floral, wild thyme, milled pepper and anise details echoing on the lasting finish. Drink now through 2040. Aged in larger foudres to soften its tannic structure, it has density and grip, damson, cranberry and black cherry fruit, muscular tannins, a hint of good reduction and plenty of texture and concentration. Always one of the more shuttered Artuke reds Drinking range: 2027 - 2040 Rating: 96 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (Feb 2025)
A truly beautiful, fruit-conscious wine that’s really profound, pure and complex. Nothing really stand out on the nose. It shows a wealth of black cherries, herbs, violets, ink and peppery spices. The fruit tannins are abundant and tight but polished. Really juicy, tense and long. Tempranillo and around 25% graciano. From a one-hectare plot planted in 1950 at 650 meters in Abalos. Already drinkable, but much better in the next five or six years. Rating: 97 Zekun Shuai www.jamessuckling.com (Aug 2024)
Artuke
These wines from Rioja are rooted firmly in their terroir. Artuke is all about small scale, biodynamic production: twenty two hectares of vines spread over thirty two plots between the stunning, hilly villages of Baños de Ebro and Abalos on the upper terrace of the river Ebro in La Rioja Alta, Northern Spain. Artuke is run by the family of Miguel Blanco, who have been working the land in this Northern part of Rioja Alavesa for over a century. Now, the helm is taken by Miguel's two sons Arturo and Kike de Miguel which as you might guess, is where the name 'Artuke' is derived from. The aim of the brothers has been this: To create a new and individual wine which still respects the history of the wine region and of their family wine tradition. The result: A thoroughly modern style of Rioja, but not heavily extracted or heavily wooded in style.
