The 2022 La Chenade is bashful at first, perhaps due to the weather on the day I visited, though with a few swirls, it reveals finely delineated blackberry, iris flower and subtle mineral elements on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied, but what strikes you immediately is the sheer purity of fruit. There is a patina of new oak to be subsumed (30% here), but there is plenty of substance to soak that up. It has impressive weight on the finish. This is a Lalande-de-Pomerol from Nöemie Durantou that I might have underestimated from barrel. This is a really beautiful Lalande-de-Pomerol, with very attractive, fine tannins that are polished and refined. It caresses your palate. Medium-bodied with black-olive, dark-berry and light chocolate character. It's very persistent and beautiful. One of the best wines from this appellation in a long, long time. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. Drink after 2028. Drinking range: 2028 - Rating: 94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Feb 2025)

The 2022 La Chénade is a gorgeous Lalande-de-Pomerol from sisters Noemie and Constance Durantou. A healthy dollop of Cabernet Franc (20%) lifts a core of Merlot fruit as this racy red opens in the glass. Dark cherry, blood orange, new leather and rose petal are some of the many nuances that take shape in the glass. La Chénade offers a striking combination of intensely ripe fruit and energy, all lifted by floral top notes that develop with air. This is such a compelling wine. Drinking range: 2026 - 2037 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jan 2025)

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. 30% new oak. 14.4% alc. 10000 bottles were produced. Merlot was picked between 1 – 7 October and Cabernet Franc on the 9 September. There is strictness and control in La Chenade, which is quite beautiful. Quiet, composed and perfectly judged, this is a textbook Durantou creation underpinned by discreet minerality, delicious florals and a sleek mid-palate. Bursting with wild tones and class, it never gets ahead of itself, falls out of line or becomes too excitable. It maintains its elegance all the way to the crisply tannic finish. There is no need to rush into this wine, as it has mouth-watering tension that will keep it bright for at least a decade. Rating: 17.5 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2023)

La Chenade

One of the brightest stars of Pomerol is undoubtedly Denis Durantou of the highly acclaimed Château l’Eglise-Clinet. Thankfully this glory is not enough for Denis and he also has a smaller estate in the less esteemed Lalande de Pomerol. Here Denis' skill and experience can produce magnificent wines that are a fraction of the price. The property is Château les Cruzelles, where he makes both Les Cruzelles but also La Chenade, another Lalande-de-Pomerol cuvée from the younger vines. He was even making this with Cruzelles’ grapes before he bought the estate in 2000. We champion this wine every year on primeur as it represents such consistently good value for money. Beautiful Bordeaux wine at an incredibly fair price - a rare gem.
