Opened 22nd May, at the start of the heatwave, with a BBQ. Expected this to be tight, but wanted to get a gauge on its progress, with 2022 being the first vintage.Absolutely sublime. Poured an almost luminescent purple - a guest thought it was Valpolicella Ripasso from the colour. The oak was at the fore on the first sip, but in an extremely pleasing way, but after 2-3 hours in a decanter, it has seamlessly melded into the wine.Tannins were initially quite broad and very evident. They certainly didn't go away, but with some air, resolved themselves along with the oak.The fruit profile was glorious. A vivid, red current acidity ran through the whole wine, lifting the blackcurrant, cassis and other dark fruit along with it. It was both rich and refreshing at the same time. The structure is so evident here, it will keep another 20 years, but with how much pleasure it is giving now, I see little need to wait (but I will be tucking a case away to see where this goes, as I do not anticipate my first box of the 2022 lasting long!). Drinking range: 2026 - 2050 Rating: 97 L&S (May 2026)

La Grande Cote is a part of the La Mauriane property, just under one hectare, planted with 42% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, with an average age of 75 years, on a limestone slope. Organically cultivated, hand-harvested after a severe green harvest.

The destemmed grapes are fermented in wooden vats with temperature control, and the malolactic fermentation and élevage take place in 500 litre barrels.

Winemaker's notes (May 2024)

La Mauriane

La Mauriane is a small vineyard within Château Rigaud, a Puisseguin-St-Emilion property owned by Pierre Taïx, who owns a few other properties in Puisseguin and the neighbouring Côtes de Castillon. La Mauriane is a micro-cuvée, made by Pierre, who is a university lecturer (economics) in his other life. One of the three parcels that make this extraordinary wine consists of eighty year old vines planted by his grandfather. The vineyard here is farmed organically. 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

This wine isn't currently part of a mixed case, but you can always browse our full selection of mixed cases here.
