Vineyard Aux Réas

0.55 hectares on the Nuits Saint Georges end of Vosne Romanee next to the Clos de Reas. The vines were planted in 1956 giving a lot of concentration to this wine, which is on limestone. There is a slight reduction here, but just enough to make it even more lively and energetic. This is absolutely typical Vosne with notes like dark raspberry, blueberry and red current. The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas has a dense nose packed with mulberry and blackberry scents, and a touch of pressed violet. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, quite rounded and velvety smooth. Plush but retaining plenty of delineation on the finish, I appreciate the length and sumptuousness of this cuvée without compromising typicité. Drinking range: 2026 - 2044 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2024)

All destemmed as Aux Réas has all the limestone freshness it needs. A dense dark purple, almost black in the centre. A little bit reduced which slightly dries the finish, but that will be sorted. Brilliant fruit between the two plenty of energy, a saline touch behind the dark red fruit. A fine crunchy finish as the wine cleans up in the glass. Drinking range: 2030 - 2037 Rating: **** Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2024)

Riper aromas of cassis, poached plum, crushed anise and floral top notes give way to sleek, rich and very punchy medium-bodied flavors that flash plenty of minerality on the firm, compact and serious finish where a touch of youthful austerity slowly emerges. As is almost always the case, this is a big Vosne villages that's going to take its time maturity. Drinking range: 2032 - Rating: 89-92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2024)

Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair

Thibault Liger-Belair has two hectares in Les Saint Georges, the vineyard which gives Nuits the rest of its name, and 60 ares out of a total of 4 hectares of the Grand Cru Richebourg, as well as a good holding in the Clos Vougeot and some well-placed village wines. The vineyards are a good start, but it is Thibault himself who has catapulted this domaine straight into the very top echelons of Côte de Nuits domaines from his first vintage (2002). Thibault was trained as an oenologist but first worked as a wine buyer. He has come to wine making with a wide experience of wine buying, and has had the advantage of having discussed wine-making for many years, with the benefit of his oenological background, with some of the best winemakers of the world. Viticulture is biodynamic (since 2005), yields low but not ludicrously low, everything is pragmatic, so that he should be doing just what is necessary and no more. He uses 40-50% new wood maximum. The wines are bright, pure, focused, aromatic and elegant without lacking anything in the way of stuffing.
