With its distinctive baby-blue wax capsule, the Alberelli di Giodo 2023 Carricante is another highlight in my tasting of white wines from Etna. I love the clarity and brightness of aromas achieved here. They include, citrus, white peach and lots of delicate salty mineral shadings that add to a sense of lasting structure and depth. The wine gives the appearance of simplicity, but it is anything but. It offers continued complexity and layers of interest as it warms in the glass. Fruit is harvested from 50- to 80-year-old vines at a high 750 to 850 meters in elevation. Winemaking is in stainless steel only. This is a 4,000-bottle release. Drinking range: 2024 - 2030 Rating: 94 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Apr 2025)

The purity of fruit and transparency are really captivating, with aromas of dried apples, limes, green mangoes and crushed stones. Medium-bodied with flavors of sliced apples and pears. Minerally undertone. Long and flavorful. Drink now. Drinking range: 2025 - Rating: 95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jun 2025)

Alberelli di Giodo

Megastar winemaker Carlo Ferrini fell in love with the wines of Etna and the island of Sicilly over the course of numerous visits to this beautiful, sun-kissed island. He is a good friend and collaborator of the charming Gianfranco at the Le Casematte winery - this relationship led to his hunt for his own vineyard in the area. Finally the dream is realised - and 2016 marks the first vintage release of the new Alberelli di Giodo wine.

Carlo started this project in 2012, hoovering up some small plots of old (70-90 years old) bush-vine Nerello Mascalese, as and when they have been available, after 5 years Carlo has secured a total of just 1 Hectare of vines. They are all really high up the Etna slopes at nearly 3000m altitude. In fact so high they are out of the DOC Etna - which runs up to about 1100m! The wine is therefore officially a DOC Sicilia - but could not be more Etna in shape, feel and essence. This small-production beauty is only available in tiny quantities and is sure to be an instant classic. New listings don't come much more exciting than this.

NSPCC Fine Wine Challenge | 2026

The 30th Anniversary NSPCC Fine Wine Challenge Collection.
Last month, we gathered in London for the 30th Anniversary of the NSPCC Fine Wine Challenge. It was a spectacular evening where the Lea & Sandeman team poured over 2,500 glasses of wine to blind-taste for a room full of eager, competitive palates.
It was a brilliant success, raising over £250,000 for Childline.
To celebrate this milestone, we have assembled a 6-bottle case containing half a dozen of the exceptional wines poured during the quiz, allowing you to recreate the challenge from the comfort of your own dining table.
A portion of the proceeds from every case sold will be donated directly to the NSPCC. These are not simple, entry-level wines designed to be easily guessed. We selected complex, profound expressions from some of our most revered estates to truly test the room.
What is Inside the Anniversary Collection:
2023 SANCERRE Silex Chavignol, Domaine Delaporte: An unusually sumptuous, flint-rich Sancerre with flavours of lemon, honey tea, and chamomile.
2023 ALBERELLI DI GIODO Carricante: The legendary Carlo Ferrini's Sicilian masterpiece. Grown at high altitude on Mount Etna, it crackles with white peach and delicate, salty mineral shadings.
2022 SAINT VÉRAN Les Pommards, Domaine Barraud: A beautifully powerful white Burgundy from 60-year-old vines, displaying excellent volume and a classic, mineral core.
2020 POMMARD Tavannes, Domaine Fernand & Laurent Pillot: A rich, plush, and fleshy Pinot Noir from an entirely massal-selected old-vine plot. Exceptionally concentrated and powerful.
2020 GIGONDAS Clos Derrière Vieille, Domaine Santa Duc: A stunningly elegant, biodynamic southern Rhône blend, aged in oak foudres and clay amphorae. Expect thyme, rosemary, and vivid mountain freshness.
2023 FLEURIE Cuvée Tardive, Clos de La Roilette: Velvety richness, fine ripe tannins, and a core of sweet kirsch liqueur. All you could ever need from Gamay, from an estate that charmingly still uses its 1920s racehorse label.
This case is a masterclass of fine wine. At £230, a slight discount from our usual case price, the shipping is entirely on us.
