Bernard Baudry has rightfully gained an enormous reputation for fascinating and delicious iterations of the local Cabernet Franc grape, most famously with his reds. Here the rosé is also 100% Cabernet Franc – but with just a short burst on the skins adding just a chink of pink colour - and then fermented and aged in unlined cement tanks – he retains freshness and bright-lines. A delicious, joyous alternative to something from the almost ubiquitous south-eastern corner of France. L&S (Jul 2024)

The fruit for Matthieu’s rosé comes from cornuelles, clay and flint soils characteristic of the Chinon appellation. Most of the vines are on the plateau behind the town, although the blend also included a little from Les Granges this year, to fill the cuve. Matthieu doesn’t pick too early as is often the case for rosé, as he says “I like ripe fruit for my rosé.” It was bottled in March 2024, and this sample was tasted from bottle. The nose is all strawberry, raspberry and peach, very fresh and pure. A rather plump and pretty palate follows, floral and fresh, with lovely acids, and a lick of tannin too. Bright and zippy, despite 100% malolactic fermentation, this is very good. The alcohol on the label is 12.5%. Rating: 93 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (May 2024)
Domaine Bernard Baudry
Bernard Baudry was born into a Chinon winemaking family in Cravant-les-Côteaux, Loire. Having studied oenology in Beaune, he started making his own wines in 1982, with only two hectares of vines. Today the estate is made up of 30 hectares, from six different sites, all of which are worked without the use of artificial herbicides or pesticides. His wines reflect the great versatility of Cabernet Franc when grown on different sites and are very much 'terroir' driven. Matthieu, his son has been working with Bernard since 2000 and now does most of the wine-making - the tradition continues. Beautiful wines, purely made, crisp and juicy Cabernet Franc.
