KUMEU 'VILLAGE'

2023 Chardonnay Kumeu River

IN STOCK
Grapes Chardonnay
Colour White
Origin New Zealand, North Island
ABV 12.5%

This is a subtle, well-put-together 2023 Chardonnay Village with a flush of bright, mouthwatering acidity that holds the wine together as if a zipper. Restrained fruit meets gentle leesy characters, lending a savory element to the style. It's not a long wine but is done in a zesty aperitif style Chardonnay for drinking in youth on a summer's day. Drinking range: 2024 - 2028 Rating: 87 Rebecca Gibb MW - Vinous.com (Sept 2024)

*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles of wine (or 9 litre equivalent) or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified (4.5 litres) to get the discounted 'case price' for each bottle.

2023 was a tricky vintage, resulting in 30% lower yields than in 2022. They suffered from some downy mildew and also cyclone Gabrielle, so it was undoubtedly challenging. This wine is made from 88% Rays Road fruit (Hawke’s Bay), so it has a steelier limestone edge, and the fruit is distinctly lemony and creamy. Drinking now and fairly simple, this is a hint of fresh herbs and mint, but other than that, it is a textbook, silky citrus-soaked Chardonnay with a kiss of acidity, and it is not one for the cellar. Rating: 16.5/20 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Sept 2024)

A blend of Hawkes Bay and Auckland fruit, this is surprisingly approachable with a bright juicy meyer lemon and crisp grapefuit fruit character. A wee hint of biscotti on the palate gives an textural edge with succulent acidity ensuring a crisp, citrus finish. Drinking range: 2024 - 2027 Rating: *** 90 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (May 2024)

A delicious chardonnay with a sour lemon, cooked apple and grapefruit undertone. Medium body. Tangy and fruity. Drink now. Screw cap. Rating: 92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Nov 2023)
