The Py is a fairly large hill, wide but with a modest height, the soil is dominated by the classic blue rock, so celebrated here. It is the heart of the AOC Morgon. Aromas of cherries and blackberries. Powerful, rich Beaujolais wine with good aging potential. Winemaker's notes (Dec 2025)

Domaine Rochette

The Rochette family estate was new to us at the end of 2009, and a very happy discovery indeed. The Beaujolais Villages and Régnié come from 50 year-old vines on stony-sandy soils on a granite bedrock,. The Rochettes work with a very traditional but also clearly very rigorous approach to the viticulture, and, as usual in Beaujolais, where the 'gobelet' training of the vines make them impossible to work by machine, they hand-pick and make a severe selection in the vineyard. Vinification is traditional, in cuve, to make wines which accentuate fruit purity.
The wines have a real identity of their own - as Matthieu says 'it is the terroir that gives us the distinction to the wines - we do not interfere in the cellar - and they all come from the same grape' - Gamay. When tasting the line up in the cellars with the family this incredible distinction could not have been more clear - from the bouncy Beaujolais Villages through the Régniés and on to the Morgon distinct personalities are dramatically different - fascinating. Very sadly Joël died in 2015 - but Matthieu is continuing his father's great work without missing a beat ably supported by his wonderful mother, Chantal. These wines simply sing. Charming and real - a great bargain from these beautiful rolling hills.

  • 2023 FLEURIE Cuvée Tardive, Clos de La Roilette: Grown on an unusual mix of manganese and clay, then aged in century-old oak casks. It delivers a deeply structured, velvety richness and texture with fine, ripe tannins and sweet kirsch liqueur on the finish.

  • 2024 MORGON Côte de Py, Domaine Rochette: Sourced from the heart of the AOC on classic blue rock soils. A powerful and rich edition with intense aromas of cherries and blackberries, offering brilliant ageing potential.

  • 2024 CÔTE DE BROUILLY Les Grillés, Domaine Chevalier-Métrat: Beautifully fragrant and lifted, featuring vibrant notes of red currants, raspberries, and blueberries. Richly fruited with great freshness and flesh delivered in a lip-smacking style.

  • 2023 RÉGNIÉ Cuvée des Braves, Domaine Rochette: Crafted from venerable vines up to 80 years old. Everything feels entirely measured and assured in this juicy, supple, and gently persistent wine, making it quite possibly the domaines finest release.

  • 2024 BROUILLY Les Mines, Domaine Chevalier-Métrat: Tended from ancient bush vines on sunny southern slopes, this wine features a pretty nose of violets, cherry, and raspberry. The palate has good richness and lovely flesh, mixing perky cherries with smashed fresh strawberries.
