Despite tough conditions in the area - the team at Ca La Bionda have done an amazing job this year. Quantities generally are down in 2024, but by cutting the Amarone production down, they have been able to use that top juice from the estate to bolster this Classico - in quality as well as quantity. It's a remarkable effort. Beautiful perfume of strawberries and cherries. The palate is juicy and succulent with gently ripe, silky red fruits notes. Bright and sleek energy on the palate with 'just enough' freshness and structure. Well poised and really moreish! Finishes bright and clean as a whistle. L&S (Apr 2025)

The 2024 Valpolicella Classico is vividly fruit-focused, mixing strawberries and wild blueberries with sweet herbs. It is juicy yet lifted in style with notable minerality and a subtle citrus twang that enlivens its wildberry fruits. Slightly chewy yet fresh, it tapers off with medium length and a tart cranberry tinge. Rating: 90 Eric Guido, www.vinous.com (Sept 2025)

Ca' La Bionda

We have long been on the search for a great source of top Valpolicella and so when a recommendation came our way from not just Fabio Alessandria at Burlotto, but also Christoph Kunzli at Le Piane we sat up and took note and we loved what we tasted. Ca' la Bionda was established in the commune of Marano di Valpolicella in 1902 by Pietro Castellani a dedicated grape grower and winemaker. Today the fourth generation of the family run the estate along organic lines (certified since 2016) and have recently refurbished the winery to make use of gravity rather than pumps to move the musts and wine. Vineyards have had traditional Marogne (dry stone walls) re-established to give greater exposure to purely autochthonous varieties (Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara). Ferments are with purely wild yeasts and Suplhur usage is kept to a minimum.

Matthew Jukes Italian Mixed 12 | Offer

La Dozzina Italiana: The Matthew Jukes Highlights Collection
We are absolutely delighted to share critic Matthew Jukes glowing reviews of our Italian portfolio from his recent MoneyWeek column. As Jukes notes: The L&S team is extremely adept at sniffing out great value and authentic Italian superstars, and I heartily suggest you taste as many as you can.
While we could not squeeze his fabulous first fifteen into a single box, we have plucked out a handy dozen to make a very exciting mixed case. La Dozzina Italiana comprises a sextet of jaw-dropping beauties for the whites, completed by one electrifying Rosato and five spectacular reds. All of this is available for slightly less than our usual case price, offering a magnificent dive into the finest Italian viticulture.
The Whites:
2025 Pagliatura, Vermentino Toscana, Fattoria di Magliano: A gorgeous, effortlessly classy Vermentino with a zesty, sea-spray palate. It is the ultimate aperitif white.
2024 Friulano Visintini: A bold, juicy, white-pepper-spiked wine with more balance than is typically seen in this variety.
2024 Zuani Bianco: Kaleidoscopic, ever-changing and thrillingly balanced, tracking perfectly since the 2009 vintage.
2025 Cortese Bricco Bartolomeo La Colombera: A very clever wine that uses the Gavi grape Cortese to great effect at a magnificent price. It is one of the wisest if you like Gavi wines of the year so far.
2024 Kratos Fiano Luigi Maffini: Already a legendary wine, showcasing the stellar Fiano grapes sultry, near-tropical fruit cut with raucously dramatic volcanic minerality.
2024 Mofete Etna Bianco Palmento Costanzo: One of the most accurate and delicious Etna whites around. It offers incredible value for money compared to many Emperors new clothes Etna wines on the market.
The Rosato:
2025 Illario Rosato, Fattoria di Magliano: It has all the drama and electricity you are looking for in this spine-tinglingly refreshing style of wine.
The Reds:
2024 Valpolicella Classico, Ca La Bionda: It covers a multitude of bases when it comes to food pairing. Served cool, this wine is a spectacular weapon in your gastro-armoury.
2021 Chianti Classico, Castagnoli: This estate Chianti is a cracker, and at five years of age, it is sitting in its sweet spot of life. Plush, regal, and perfectly balanced, it is bound to shock you with the value it offers.
2021 Tassinaia, Castello del Terriccio: One of the best value Super Tuscans around. If you fancy a Merlot and Cabernet blend with lashings of Tuscan flair, this is your wine.
2022 Bolgheri Rosso, Le Macchiole: With an incredibly balanced and supple palate alongside a bargain price, this Merlot, Cabernet, and Syrah blend is a true superstar. Ignore it at your peril.
2023 Rosso di Montalcino, Ginestreto, Fuligni: Epic estates often produce Rossos that are medium-weight, drink earlier, and cost the right price. This 2023 is the finest we have ever tasted from this legendary producer. Do not miss out.
