2025 4ème Cru Classé Pauillac

Grapes Merlot, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Pauillac
Classification 4ème Cru Classé
ABV 12.7%

Fragrant and floral on the opening, with chalky tannins and a gorgeous lift through the palate, showing crayon, raspberry, cassis and cherry pit. There is a delicacy and finesse evident in this Duhart, very pretty, with a less powerful structure than the 2022 vintage. 3.77ph. 27hl/h yields. Rain in this part of Pauillac saw 80mm over Easter then nothing until 25mm on June 22, and 30mm end of July, so two very important moments to counter the heatwave. Then temperatures cooled until August 11-15 before spikes of real heat, 40+C, until the summer broke at the end of August with 55mm of rain, then another 60mm up until the harvest. Harvest started September 2, same as in 2022. Drinking range: 2029 - 2044 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (Apr 2026)

We tasted the Lafite stable of wines with Eric Kohler, the Technical Director - and he was unsurprisingly really pleased with the results in 2025 - except for the tiny yields. Here at Duhart it is just 27 HL/HA - just more than half of where they would like to be. The wine is super this year- fine and detailed - it has wonderful energy - and pretty fruit - but it is the pure drive that tantalizes most memorably. It has a sense of grandeur to the red fruit, fennel and gentle graphite notes that form a tightly wound core of fresh charm. Serious stuff here in 2025 - and more fun to taste than many recent vintages.L&S (Apr 2026)

A juicy and savory red with blackberry, chocolate, dried meat and earth aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with plenty of flavor and a forest floor aftertaste. Ripe tannins. A blend of 73% cabernet sauvignon and 27% merlot. Rating: 95-96 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2026)

The 2025 Duhart-Milon was picked from September 4 to 22. It has a very delineated and quite mineral-driven bouquet, very focused with beautifully integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with chiselled tannins, layered graphite-infused black fruit and a strict and linear, sapid finish that could only come from Pauillac. Almost a minimalist Duhart-Milon in some ways, but less is more. Drinking range: 2030 - 2055 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2026)

Château Duhart Milon

Pauillac Quatrième cru 1855 Château Duhart Milon is owned by its very illustrious neighbour Château Lafite-Rothschild, with whom it shares a vineyard management and wine making team. Duhart is said to have been a pirate in the service of Loius XV who settled in the Médoc in his retirement. Indeed, the "pirate's house" stood by the Gironde until the 1950's and is pictured on the label. His vineyard was united with Mandavy-Milon in the 1830's by the Castéja family. Earning 4th Growth status was a high point for Duhart-Milon with the next 100+ years being a period of some decline. Vineyards were sold off (notably to the Batailleys) and the wines declined considerably in quality. By the time Baron Eric de Rothschild bought Duhart-Milon in 1962 it was in a very sorry state with barely 17ha under vine. Rothschild ownership saw the vineyards completely re-planted and the chais (and a chais is all there is, there never has been an actual château) renovated. Today the wines are made with the same meticulous care as Lafite, but sell at a fraction of the price, making Duhart-Milon a bit of a bargain. Château Duhart-Milon sits immediately west/inland of Château Lafite-Rothschild, facing Château Lafon-Rochet across the Jalle du Breuil in Saint Estèphe. The 73ha of vineyard are planted with 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot. The Grand Vin is aged in oak barrels made by the Rothschild cooperage for up to 18 months. The second wine is called Moulin de Duhart, and a lighter styled third wine called Baron de Milon.
