The 2025 Clos Fourtet was picked between September 9 and 22, the second earliest after 2003, with a yield of 28 hl/ha. It underwent a lighter extraction at a slightly lower temperature, 24°C, during natural fermentation. It has a bright nose, a mélange of red and black fruit, orange rind and touches of crushed stone emanating from the limestone. The palate is medium-bodied, with succulent ripe tannins, leaning more towards red fruit on the mid-palate. Subtle touches of graphite and white pepper emerge towards the citrus-fresh finish, with commendable length, gentle grip and satisfying sustain. This is a great Clos Fourtet that should age well in bottle. Drinking range: 2032 - 2055 Rating: 94-96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2026)
Unfurling in the glass with notes of dark berries, plum and kirsch mingled with hints of iris and anise, the 2025 Clos Fourtet is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a multidimensional textural profile, tangy acids and a long and penetrating finish. To moderate extraction, fermentations were kept cool, at around 24 degrees Celsius, with only punching down. It's a blend of 84% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Rating: 94-96 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Apr 2026)
A deep and layered red with chocolate, berry, cherry, orange peel and some limestone aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with lovely fruit and a tangy and vivid finish. Bright acidity comes out at the end. Rating: 97-98 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2026)
Clos Fourtet
Guarding the westerly approaches to St Emilion village was a fort that became a château – Campfourtet renaming itself Fourtet sometime in the 19th Century. The 19.2 hectares are split between two main blocks, 14 hectares immediately around the buildings, and a further 5 about 400 metres away. Often spoken of as among the better estates in St Emilion, it has only really lived up its potential greatness in recent years under the tenure of the Cuvelier family, who purchased Clos Fourtet in 2001. These Cuveliers are not related to the Léoville Poyferré Cuveliers, and came from outside the world of wine - Philippe was running the Guilbert / Niceday office supplies company. His son Mathieu helps to run the properties. The Cuveliers own Château Poujeaux, in Moulis-en-Médoc, and subsequently bought Clos Fourtet’s neighbour Château Grandes Murailles, although they have resisted the temptation to merge the two together. The vineyards are 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and only 5% Cabernet Franc, with an average age of 30 years. There is a tendency toward organic/biodynamic viticulture, although full conversion is still some way off.
