Wendy and Charles Outhwaite planted their 9.5 hectare vineyard on free-draining greensand near Pulborough in 2008. The crop was from the 2010 harvest, and the first release of the 'Classic Cuvée' (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) was in June 2013. A new Blanc de Noirs has just been released, and this Rosé is not to be officially launched until the spring of 2015, so is currently only available at Lea & Sandeman. L&S (Jan 2018)
*Case Price: Mix any 12 bottles of wine or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits or Fortified to get the 'case price' for each bottle.
A wonderful nose of red fruit jelly and biscuit aromas. A creamy palate interlaced with summer berries and a slightly spiky mousse adds to the wine's overall deliciousness. (Bronze Medal Winner). Decanter World Wine Awards 2015 (Jul 2015)
A Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier Blancs de Noir from a new vineyard near Pulborough which launched its first wine, a white Classic Cuvée, last year. Like the Classic, the pale pink rosé is based on the 2010 vintage, so it has a bit of age behind it, although there's still plenty of sherbetty acid piercing through the summery red-berry fruit. Rating: 88-88 www.thewinegang.com (Oct 2014)
Ambriel English Rosé is infused with ripe strawberries, perfumed elderflowers and honeyed rose petals finishing with a coquettish zing of sherbet. Flirtatious with fine bubbles, this quaffable, well-balanced wine is quintessentially English. Winemaker's notes (Sep 2014)
Redfold Vineyards are situated overlooking West Sussex’s beautiful South Downs, with Ambriel being made from grapes grown on what used to be a hill used for grazing sheep. Owner Wendy Outhwaite, former barrister and QC, strives to produce wines which reflect the particular characteristics of their soil and climate, or ‘terroir’.
Charles and Wendy built their own state of the art winery adjacent to the vineyard, to which the grapes are taken immediately after being picked. Unusually, Redfold only vinify grapes that they have grown, and don’t have any contract winemaking in order to offset their start-up costs. The wines really are solely from the South Downs.
Redfold concentrate on sparkling wines, as is typical of many of the English wine producers, using the Traditional Method and produced from the classic champagne grape varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. They may be fairly new to the English wine world, but Redfold have already won silver at the IWC awards, perhaps due to the fact that, in their own words, ‘our wines are unapologetically English – and they taste divine!’
