Very bright ruby color. A distinctly fresh nose offers up notes of yeast, red berry fruit, quinine and an interesting hint of cassis. The firm if not especially refined mousse supporting the nicely detailed and energetic flavors that terminate in an agreeably dry, crisp and bitter cherry-inflected finish. This is lovely because unlike so many examples of rosé, the finish is crisp and dry rather than mildly sweet and cloying. To enjoy now and over the next few years. Drinking range: 2020 - Rating: 91 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2020)

Disgorged in July 2017, the latest rendition of the NV Brut Rosé Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with aromas of smoky blood orange, rose petals and raspberries. On the palate, it's full-bodied, broad and vinous, with a pinpoint mousse, ripe acids and a deep, fleshy core of fruit. This is a gourmand, characterful wine that will work well at the table. It's a rosé de saignée that incorporates a small proportion of Chardonnay. Drinking range: 2018 - 2028 Rating: 93 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (May 2019)

The NV Brut Authentique Rosé is the most complete and satisfying of the three wines I tasted. Powerful and ample in the glass, the Rosé is wonderfully fleshy, and yet all nothing is out of place. To be sure, the Authentique is an overt, vinous Rosé but the house style seems to work especially well in this wine. Disgorged: December 18, 2017. Rating: 91 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Dec 2018)

Champagne Barnaut

Edmond Barnaut was a grape-grower and wine-broker when in 1873 he married the daughter of an old Bouzy family, Apolline Godmé-Barancourt. Using his own and his wife's vineyards he created his own marque and began selling bottles the following year. Philippe and Laurette Secondé took over as the fifth generation in 1985, and they have now been joined by their son Guillaume.

The Secondés make well-aged Champagnes (five years average for the Grande Réserve) which are very representative of the full-bodied style of Bouzy - the excellent Pinot Noir of the village's Grand Cru Vineyards providing the backbone (2/3) of the Grande Réserve and all of the Blanc de Noirs. As Philippe puts it 'I want to express our exceptional terroir, naturally and simply, without artifice and without giving in to fashions.'.

The domaine is certified for High Environmental Value (HVE) and Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne (VDC).
