A big, full-blown, powerful blanc de noirs (100% Pinot Noir from the Grand Cru vineyards of Bouzy), which nevertheless retains a balance and freshness along with its considerable vinosity. Rated even higher than Bollinger by Robert Parker this is exceptional value! L&S (Jul 2019)

*STAR BUY* The toasty, sappy thrust of a champagne made entirely from pinot noir is immensely pleasing. This is bold, big, reassuring and amazing value. 'The Best Champagnes for Christmas'.Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph(Nov 2018)

Up next, we have a bottle from a small grower based in Bouzy, which was, and to some extent still is, known as red wine country. Blanc de noirs means it’s only made from dark grapes which you can taste in the vivid, orangey fruit moving into marmalade flavours that have a real smokiness on the finish. Tangy and delicious.BBC Good Food Guide(Mar 2018)

The NV Brut Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Quintessence du Pinot Noir is a beautiful, resonant wine with tons of Bouzy textural richness. Small red berry, dried herbs, crushed flowers and spice fill out the wine's frame effortlessly. Readers who enjoy Blanc de Noirs will find much to admire here. This is a terrific showing. Rating: 93 Antonio Galloni, 2017)

Intensely yeasty, leesy nose, poised, a classic blend; wild strawberry and savoury notes inform the palate with good autolytic definition and length. Drinking range: 2017 - 2020 Rating: 88 Decanter Magazine(Jun 2017)

All-Pinot Noir Champagne in the characterisitically plump, fleshy style of the Grand Cru village of Bouzy from which it comes. It has a flowing, creamy texture and biscuity richness, but finishes on a lingeringly refreshing, crisp, citrus note. A good Champagne for drinking with food, although it certainly doesn't need it. Rating: 90 The Wine Gang - 2016)

Big and much more refined than the Aube Blanc de Noirs with which the UK (mass) market is flooded. Neat and crisper than the Grande Cru Reserve. Very appetising. VGV Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson MW OBE -

From Bouzy. Lots of development on the nose – very flattering. Quite rich but beautifully balanced. Lemon mousse sensation. Very easy to drink. Rating: 17.5 Jancis Robinson MW OBE -

The Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru blossoms on the palate with an expansive core of perfumed fruit. This finely textured, silky wine possesses notable clarity and delineation in an understated yet pleasing style. The long, clean finish gives the wine a touch more freshness than the Brut Grand Cru Grande Reserve. This is a highly rewarding wine to enjoy over the next few years. Rating: 91-91 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate,

Light, bright gold with a strong mousse. Citrus and pear aromas are underscored by subtle nuttiness, with dried flowers and honey adding complexity. Deep in orchard fruit flavors, with an element of lemon zest adding energy and lift. Definitely on the rich side, but there's also vivacity and balance. Finishes with gentle grip and an echo of floral honey. This would be great with washed-rind cheeses. Rating: 90-90 Josh Raynolds, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

I very much like the complexity of the green apple, pear and white flower scents that are trimmed in toasty yeast elements that can also be found on the delicious and relatively full-bodied flavors that possess the same fine depth as communicated by the nose, all wrapped in a succulent and saliva-inducing finale. This is really quite good and while I wouldn't describe it as an elegant Champagne, if you enjoy full-flavored, indeed even robust, examples, this would be a good one to check out. Rating: 92 Allen Meadows,

Full-bodied and biscuity, sporting red berry, citrus and honey aromas and flavours. Dense, mouth coating and rich enough to stand up to seafood dishes. Rating: 88-88 The Wine Spectator,

Blanc de Noirs champagne, made in this case entirely from black-skinned Pinot Noir grapes, is one of the few sparklers that can wash down punchy festive fare and perk up jaded palates. Edmond Barnaut at Bouzy is a new name to me but his full-bodied bubbly from the grand cru vineyards of Bouzy are a joy, and his powerful blanc de Noirs is full of seductive ripe, waxy, winey fruit that will have plenty of admirers.Jane MacQuitty, The Times

Champagne Barnaut

When Edmond Barnaut married in 1874, he created this marque with his own and his wife's vineyards. Since 1985 the fifth generation has been in charge with Philippe Secondé making well-aged Champagnes (five years average for the Grande Réserve) which are very representative of the full-bodied style of Bouzy - the excellent Pinot Noir of the village's Grand Cru Vineyards providing the backbone (2/3) of the Grande Réserve and all of the Blanc de Noirs.
