England Brut

Grapes Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier
Colour White
Origin United Kingdom, England
ABV 12%

Beautifully smooth mousse loaded with soft red fruit, a gentle apple skin note adds a pep of bright zip and then is subsumed into the joyful, easy and broader orchard fruit weight. This fills the palate and is punctuated by lighter summer meadow notes and a long pleasing finish that makes you want another sip. Perhaps not the most sophisticated label - but this is a dangerously moreish glass of bubbles. Blended by the talented Pommery cellar-master Thierry Gasco from Hattingly Valley reserve wines this is a very pleasing debut! We look forward to see what they can achieve from their own fruit when their Alresford vineyard in Hampshire comes on stream soon. L&S (Apr 2018)

12% alcohol. This is crisp and taut with good acidity, but also some attractive toasty depth. Combines lemony fruit with some riper apple notes and a very fine texture, with hints of bread, honeycomb and almonds. The dominant feature here is lovely taut, pure fruit. Impressive stuff. Louis Pommery

The house revealed its plans to put down roots in England in 2014, announcing a partnership with Hampshire’s Hattingley Valley to use their facilities to produce its first English sparkler – Louis Pommery England. At the same time, Pommery was shoring up the purchase of a 40-hectare site called Pinglestone in Alresford, Hampshire, overseen by Clément Pierlot, who has been director of Vranken-Pommery‘s vineyards since 2004. In 2014, he took charge of oenological development, and was appointed Pommery’s new chef de cave last year, taking over from Thierry Gasco, whose attention has been refocused on directing Pommery’s operations in the US, England and the south of France.
