MANZANILLA

La Gitana 'En Rama' Hidalgo

Grapes Palomino
Origin Spain, Sherry
ABV 15.5%

We tasted this today. The sample was straight from the barrel, and this is the whole point of en Rama - the freshest way to enjoy this brilliant sherry - straight from the cask, without fining and only very light filtration. Medium bodied, savoury and quite broad in the middle with tangy citrus and apple notes and a slightly nutty finish, this is a great example of what 'En Rama' Manzanilla should be. If you're a sherry fan you will love this. L&S (Apr 2012)

My pulse quickens at this time of year when La Gitana’s En Rama is shipped over to the UK for its annual, limited-release run. This is the wild, revved up, mesmerising version of the everyday glugger, La Gitana Manzanilla, itself a stunning, bone dry wine. Made from free run juice and using only natural yeasts for fermentation this is one of the most unique and otherworldly wines on the planet. The term ‘En Rama’ means that this Sherry is unfiltered and unfined, so it is effectively like drinking it straight from the barrel. You must track it down at all costs if you love dry Sherry.Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Apr 2017)

From the Balbaina Alta vineyard. Cold stabilised and lightly filtered. Pale gold and a little darker than the non-en-rama La Gitana. Much more intense and savoury than the non en-rama, less polished but more aromatic. Almost musty but definitely not corked. Spicy and dried grasses again as well as a salty yeast intensity. Very saline and mouth-watering on the palate. Not quite as deep on the palate as some but long. Mouth-watering finish. Rating: 17 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2017)
