We tasted this with the charming Javier Hidalgo today. The sample he brought with him was straight from the barrel, and this is the whole point of en Rama - the freshest purest way to enjoy this brilliant sherry - straight from the cask, without fining or filtration. Medium bodied, with tangy citrus and apple notes and a slightly nutty finish, this is a great example of what 'En Rama' Manzanilla should be. If you're a sherry fan you will love this. L&S (Apr 2016)

It’s a parcel that I am very excited to open each year. It’s not very big and it only weighs a few pounds but when the dinky, preview, sample bottle of La Gitana’s En Rama arrives I get a roller-coaster thrill. Made from only the ‘free run’ juice and only using natural yeasts for fermentation this is the most honest and elemental of all styles of Manzanilla. The term ‘En Rama’ means that this bone dry, palate-invigorating, sharply tangy Sherry is bottled without filtration or fining. It is literally from the barrel and therefore it is the untainted juice directly harvested from Palomino grapes grown in the famous Albariza soils of the Balbaina and Miraflores districts of El Puerto de Santa María respectively Sanlúcar de Barrameda. La Gitana (the normal cuvée on the market - ed.) is one of the most incredible wines found on our shelves and there is a bottle stationed permanently in my fridge door, but the rare, seasonal En Rama version turns up almost exactly when this column is published and it tastes like you are standing in the Bodega and have simply plunged your arm into the barrel and pulled out and ice cold glass of electrifying Manzanilla. Classic ozone and salty notes of Manzanilla with a floral touch and plenty of nutty and dry apple fruit, but there's a meatiness too. That meaty, umami flavour that is earthy and savoury follows through on the palate, giving this a broad mid-palate, before apple core and nuts and then a crisp lemony acidity gives this a typically fresh finish.
