Steven Spurrier (Signed by the Author - Hardback)

This is the story of Steven Spurrier’s life in wine, a life he was inspired to take up in 1954, after drinking a glass of Cockburn’s 1908 at his ancestral home, aged 13. He entered the wine trade ten years later and has lived through it, experiencing a rocky but fascinating ride for over 50 years, culminating in planting his own vineyard to make English sparkling wine; a risky step which led Baron Eric de Rothschild to say with sympathy ‘welcome to the club’. My favourite sentence in Steven Spurrier’s new autobiography is the one where he describes spending a night in a cell for being drunk and disorderly and says: “I have only been to gaol one more time.” The self-deprecating humour I knew; the more rakish side of the debonair wine expert – no, legend – widely regarded as one of the most influential of his generation is one I hadn’t met. Spurrier founded the Christie’s wine course in the early Eighties and is a long-time consulting editor and columnist for Decanter magazine. He made his name as a wine merchant in France, where he bought Les Caves de la Madeleine, set up a wine school and organised the blind tasting known as the Judgment of Paris which in 1976 so shook up the hierarchy of Californian versus French wines that the story was made into a 2008 film, Bottle Shock, in which Alan Rickman played Spurrier....Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph (Jun 2018)
