A very small offer to take our minds off the shenanigans in Bordeaux, and while the weather is still making us think in terms of reds: the great wines of the southern Rhône in 2010.

If 2007 was thick and massive, 2008 was crunchier and provides fantastic drinking now. 2009 in the Rhône had the extraordinary fine tannins of that vintage all over France, making wines with silk velvet texture, a luxurious opulence. So can 2010 really be even better?

The simple answer is yes, or at the very least maybe. For me they have the what the French call 'éclat' and it this that makes these wines so exciting. They just have an expressiveness, a sort of clarity of purpose and definition which makes them appealing and likeable. They have all the ripeness of 2009 with none of the heaviness of 2007. They are quite simply lovely wines. Don't miss them.
