“When the cat’s away...” I contacted Lea & Sandeman while Charles Lea was away touring Europe and spoke to the delightful Phil and David. It appears that they took this opportunity to sneak in a few distinctly avante garde wines for this month’s wine club. The result is a mix of stoic classicism and joyful modernism. These days, elite wine merchants must stay ahead of the pack to maintain a degree of innovation and interest. The wine world is vast and while I filter out the dross for you, it is important to realise that this process has already been undertaken by merchants and their buyers. I tend to write up around 2% of the wines I taste, but when it comes to this column, the percentage skyrockets. They set the tone for what we drink at home and they educate this educator, too. I cannot recommend this month’s wines enough because they challenge as much as they reward.
