Georgia

Georgia is one of the oldest wine regions in the world, and what it produces could hardly be more different from anything else in our range. This is the original home of winemaking, over 8,000 years of tradition, indigenous grape varieties you won't find elsewhere, and the Qvevri: the ancient buried clay amphora in which grapes ferment on their skins for months at a time, producing wines of extraordinary texture, grip and colour.

These are the so-called 'amber' or 'orange' wines, and it's a category that can divide opinion. Too often the style is used as cover for wines that are cloudy and directionless. The wines we have sought out are something else entirely — mineral, crisp and structured, with a real sense of place and variety. Textured and grippy, yes, but also genuinely delicious.

From the quince and dried apricot of the Rkatsiteli, to the blossom-scented elegance of the Khikhvi, to the more exotic, fruit-forward Kisi with its apricot and mango and beautifully sophisticated tannin, through to the rich, herbal complexity of the Kakhuri Mtsvivani — the daddy of them all — these are wines that reward attention and repay curiosity. And if you're new to Georgia, the Tsolokouri from Labara Winery in Imereti makes a fine introduction: golden, savoury and moreish, with pear, quince and a lovely saline minerality.

These are wines for people who love wine.
