Domaine Dugat-Py, along with only DRC, Roumier, Rousseau and Leroy, is rated in the top Three Star category by the 'Classement' published by the Revue du Vin de France. These are the essence of robust Burgundy, wines of huge scale and concentration. Patience is required, so lay down a few grand bottles for your dotage.

There is a thrilling mix of richness and precision here – just as so many producers seem to be seeking additional finesse. Even Bernard Dugat-Py, whose wines have long been notable for their flamboyant health, seems to be making wines with just a little more finesse nowadays. It pays to remember that the Dugat-Py wines are built for the very long haul. As such, in my view it is largely pointless to open them young but if you can't resist then be sure to allow them plenty of time in a decanter first. Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com
