The 1999 Chambertin is a magnificent, show-stopping wine. It is black-colored and bursts from the glass with licorice, cookie dough, blackberry and cassis liqueur aromas. This is a massive, full-bodied wine with loads of sweet candied black fruits, licorice, freshly laid asphalt, spice, fresh herbs, and toasty oak flavors. It is mind-numbingly powerful, conquering the taster with wave upon wave of supple, syrup-like fruit whose flavors last throughout its seemingly unending finish. This blockbuster Burgundy should be cellared for a minimum of 10 years and may last up to 20 or more years after that. It is one of the rare wines from this region that I would have no qualms about cellaring for 30 years. Bernard Dugat's parcel of Chambertin is planted at 1400 vines per acre and averages 80 years of age. No tractor can penetrate this densely planted parcel, so Bernard Dugat, his wife, daughter, and son are forced to do all the work by hand. Rating: 96-98 Pierre Rovani, The Wine Advocate (Apr 2009)

Saturated bright ruby. Laid-back, pure aromas of kirsch, licorice, minerals and mocha. Explosive, sappy black fruit flavors are still a bit youthfully musclebound. But this extremely powerful wine already shows an almost three-dimensional texture and bright framing acids. Distinctly chewy on the back end. Dugat vinified whole clusters-in contrast to his other grand crus, which were two-thirds destemmed. Rating: 92-95 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Mar 2001)

Phenomenal grip and concentration with a driving intensity of black, spicy fruit and an amazing sappiness; like extract of pinot noir laced with cassis. The length here was much like the Charmes as I could taste this an hour later. Blow away good and worth a special search to find. Rating: 93-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2001)

Domaine Dugat-Py

Domaine Dugat-Py, along with only DRC, Roumier, Rousseau and Leroy, is rated in the top Three Star category by the 'Classement' published by the Revue du Vin de France. These are the essence of robust Burgundy, wines of huge scale and concentration. Patience is required, so lay down a few grand bottles for your dotage.
