LUPICAIA

1999 Castello del Terriccio

Grapes Merlot, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
ABV 13.5%

The estate’s 1999 Lupicaia emerges from the glass with the essence of roasted coffee beans, grilled herbs and dark fruit. This is a beautifully balanced Lupicaia blessed with knock-out aromatics, layered fruit, and a rich, powerful personality. The 1999 remains a powerful, structured Lupicaia that could use another few years in bottle to fill out its large-scaled frame. Drinking range: 2012 - 2022 Rating: 94 Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2010)

Drink 2007-14 Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot Very mellow ruby. Lively, round, rich, fully evolved with only a hint of rusty nails on the finish. Easy Italian claret. A blend of velvet, dust and fine red fruits. 13.5% Rating: 17.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jun 2009)

The '99 version of this Cabernet and Merlot based super Tuscan is one of the most successful yet produced. The masterful harmony of nose and palate are what make it so irresistible. The bouquet melds a wide range of aromas, from wild black berries to balsamic notes with undercurrents of oriental spice. The fruit that comes out on the palate is lifted by the densely woven, soft tannins and then echoed unhurriedly on the finish. Tre Bicchieri. Gambero Rosso 2002 A beautiful estate in Tuscany's Bolgheri region where oenologist Carlo Ferrini is creating 'super-French-Tuscans'. With 90%Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, this shows the ripeness and depth of the vintage, richer but perhaps less concentrated that the superb 1997, dark colour and voluptuously textured fruit with a firmness reminiscent of Pauillac.' Castello del Terriccio

The Castello del Terriccio is beautifully positioned around twenty-five kilometres north of Bolgheri, with commanding views towards Corsica. The 60 hectares of vines enjoy wonderful exposure, overlooking the sea, benefitting from its brightness and cooling breezes. The vineyards are surrounded by 'maquis' and eucalyptus trees, which as well as protecting them, also contribute to the aromas and scents that so characterise the Terriccio wines.

Planted predominately with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah, the wines are made by consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini, who has to date brought thirteen 'Tre Bicchiere' awards to the estate.

These are wines that can be approached almost immediately and yet age so well over a decade and more.

The estate continues in the hands of Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano Rossi di Medelana who took over after the extraordinarily charming Cav. Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana Serafini Ferri (or 'Pucci' as he was fondly known) who died at the end of 2019. Vittorio has the same team around him working in the cellars and the vineyards and the estate is going from strength to strength.
