A stunning Grand Cru from the Altenberg vineyard, planted with almost all of the Alsace varietals. The residual sugar level is high (100g/l) giving an impression of richness, yet the mineral strain in the wine keeps it fresh and balanced. An immensely impressive and wonderful wine. Fairly pale color. Bright aromas of lemon cream and powdered stone. Sweet and sappy, with strong acids giving lift to the captivating, superconcentrated flavors of pink grapefruit and tropical fruits. Slightly musky, with a suggestion of dried fig in the middle. Finishes dry and tactile, with outstanding persistence. Deiss says this wine always carries between 80 and 100 grams of r.s. but the impression here is much drier than that. Brace yourselves – this is a unique, vivifying vinous experience. Showing that the sum is greater than its parts, this Alsace blend of mostly Gewurztraminer and Riesling from a master yet maverick of the region is a must-try wine. Biodynamic. Jean-Michel Deiss is a passionate rebel, who claims terroir is more important than the individual varieties. He persuaded the authorities to allow him to pick and ferment the four noble grapes (Riesling, Gewurtztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat) together. This wine has nearly 100 grams of sugar. Rich and off-dry, this shows lots of dried apricot, lychee, guava and honey flavors underscored by a smoky note. A backbone of firm acidity is well-integrated and provides a mouthwatering component to this opulent wine, which has a lingering, spice-driven finish. From a Grand Cru-rated and traditionally great Gewurztraminer site which Deiss has here densely-planted with the entire range of Alsace cepages, his 2004 Altenberg de Bergheim is redolent of honey, lily, baking spices, orange liqueur and citrus zest. With tremendous polish, richness and honeyed botrytis character on the palate, this has an underlying density suggestive of minerality and presumably going far to explain why nearly three-digit residual sugar results in a wine that is certainly sweet but not overbearingly so. Candied citrus, orange liqueur and marmalade, peach preserves, nut paste, honey, and vanilla, along with doughy richness and buttery texture give this wine a patisserie character, if one simply imagines dustings of chalk dust instead of flour. Jean-Michel Deiss's wines are without doubt among the most exciting of the region. His experimental field blends in the wines he likes to call 'level of Premier Cru' are immensely impressive and worth experimenting with - they each have a definite and unique character, and are some of the most fascinating white wines in the world. Deiss may be a contrary character himself, not always in tune with other producers in the area, but the quality in the wines really does speak for what he has achieved. Biodynamic.
