PALEO

2004 Bolgheri Rosso Le Macchiole

Grapes Cab Franc
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
ABV 14%

This is a great Paleo and a great Cabernet Franc, right up there with the awesome 2001 vintage. So focused, with ultra-fine tannins and a super-long finish. The fruit is ripe and polished and everything about the wine just shouts class. Aged for eighteen months in oak 'barriques', two thirds new and one third one year old, this is highly reminiscent of a great Cheval Blanc. Grab it while you can! L&S (Apr 2008)

The 2004 Paleo Rosso is shaping up beautifully, although it is quite intense and powerful within the context of a year that generally yielded wines on the more finessed side. Still, there is plenty to admire in the wine’s sheer depth and density. Early tertiary notes are right around the corner in a wine that should drink well over the next decade. The 2004 is a gorgeous Paleo Rosso. In this vertical, it is easy to see where the 2004 belongs in the evolution of Le Macchiole. The style is a bit over-extracted, heavy and oaky by today’s standards, but this is a well-made wine for its era. Drinking range: 2014 - 2024 Rating: 93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2014)

Cabernet Franc Mid crimson. Serious nose, very varietal. Plus the ripeness of the Maremma. Excellent! Full of life and health. Really very captivating. I'd love to see this blind alongside some other similar wines from around the world. Real class as well as the appeal of sweetness and (non green) leafiness.14% Rating: 18.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jun 2009)

The 2004 Paleo (Cabernet Franc) is an intense, brooding wine imbued with the essence of dark fruit, scorched earth, grilled herbs, toasted oak and licorice. Made in a rich, super-concentrated style, this imposing Paleo will require patience. A second bottle took quite a bit of aeration before the elegance of its silky-textured tannins emerged. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2020. Rating: 94 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Jul 2008)

Le Macchiole

Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. In the heart of Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.

All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
